What’s in a Name?

Part 1:
“Jesus: He Saves’”

by Michael Lewis

December 5, 2021

A few scriptures about the importance of God coming to earth: Isaiah 9:6; Galatians 4:4; Matthew 1:23; Luke 1:34; John 1:14; John 3:16; John 13:3; Philippians 2:6,7

“Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity.”  -Colossians 4:5

“When God gives a name it is always full of meaning.”  -Luke 1:26-31

“Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.”  -Matthew 1:19

“…what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”  -Matthew 1:21

Jesus had many descriptive titles, but only one name.

Acts 13:6; Colossians 4:11

What’s in the name “Jesus”?:

1. It means “the Lord’s saves.”

“Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost.”  -Luke 19:9-10

Here’s the Good News: we can be saved through Jesus.

It is salvation for anyone, anywhere, who believes Jesus is God’s son and wants to surrender their life to Him, so He might rule their life.

2. Jesus was given this name because it names His mission and names our decision.

“And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ…”  -1 John 3:23

“Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no others name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”  -Acts 4:12

What does Christmas say about us? It says we are sinners and cannot save ourselves.

Christmas is a reality check.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”  -John 3:16

“This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”  -1 John 4:10

“I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.”  -1 John 5:13

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  -Romans 10:13

“And now what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.”  -Acts 22:16
