Part 8:
“Living for Heaven’s Sake”

by Michael Lewis

May 30, 2021

“For this world is not our permanent home; we are looking forward to a home yet to come.”  -Hebrews 13:14

“For I have told you often before, and I say it again with tears in my eyes, that there are many whose conduct shows they are really enemies of the cross of Christ. They are headed for destruction. Their god is their appetite, they brag about shameful things, and they think only about this life here on earth. But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own…”  -Philippians 3:18-21

Heaven always has implications for right now…or at least it should.

“To God’s elect, strangers in the world, scattered…”  1 Peter 1:1

“Dear friends, I warn you as ‘temporary residents and foreigners” to keep away from worldly desires that wage war against your very souls. Be careful to live properly among your unbelieving neighbors. Then even if they accuse you of doing wrong, they will see your honorable behavior, and they will give honor to God when he judges the world.’”  -1 Peter 2:11-12

What we hope for is what we should live for.  (1 Peter 4:7-10)

For Heaven’s sake, we are:

1. Pray for heaven’s perspective on earth.

Prayer is the exile’s native language.

“This, then, is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.’”  -Matthew 6:9-10

We need a whole bunch of what’s up there, down here.

2. Translate God’s heavenly love for each person.

“The end of the world is coming soon… Most important of all, continue to show deep love for each other, for love covers a multitude of sins. Cheerfully share your home with those who need a meal or a place to stay.”  -1 Peter 4:7-9

3. Build bridges from heaven to earth.

A priests and ministers build bridges to those who need the lord.

“…you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.”  -1 Peter 2:5-6

“…you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”  -1 Peter 2:9-10

People really need the lord.
