Part 4:
“Heaving is Coming to Us”

by Michael Lewis

The Bible teaches when we die we immediately go to be with the Lord.

“Then he said, ‘Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.’ Jesus answered him, ‘I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.'”  -Luke 23:42-43

“Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.”  -Philippians 1:22-24

“For we know that when this earthly tent we live in is taken down (that is, when we die and leave this earthly body), we will have a house in heaven, an eternal body made for us by God himself and not by human hands. We grow weary in our present bodies, and we long to put on our heavenly bodies like new clothing. For we will put on heavenly bodies; we will not be spirits without bodies.”  -2 Corinthians 5:1-3

“And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died.”  – 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14

Exactly what happens after we die?  Heaven come down to meet us.

  • Revelation 21:1-4
  • Heaven came down to be among God’s people
  • What if heaven is on earth?

“He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets.”  -Acts 3:21

“…I assure you that when the world is made new…”  -Matthew 19:28

2 Peter 3:10-12

  • V10: “…heaven and earth will pass away.”
  • V11: “…everything will be destroyed.”
  • V12: “…it will be destruction by fire.”

What we can look forward to:

  1. It will be existence without a curse.
  2. The new earth has been planned, but is NOT here yet (1 Thess. 4:13-18).
  3. But what difference does that make right now?
    1. It fills me with excitement and hope for what will be.
    2. The new earth informs and motivate who I want to be right now.

Motivating holiness now by what is to come…

  • Colossians 3:1-15
  • 1 Thessalonians 5:1-24

“But we are looking forward to the new heavens and new earth he has promised, a world filled with God’s righteousness. And so, dear friends, while you are waiting for these things to happen, make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.”  -2 Peter 3:13-14
