Our passion cannot be allowed to become so toxic it hurts others, especially within God’s Family.
I will never tell you how to vote.
Political power is real.
“Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.” -Matthew 22:21
Key Question: Which dominion will become the lens through which we see the other?
Four Convictions About Christians and Politics:
1. Jesus is more important than Caesar.
“‘Shall I crucify your king?’ Pilate asked. ‘We have no king but Caesar,’ the chief priests answered. Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified.” -John 19:15-16
Acts 17:1-9 Thessalonica
2. Kingdom is greater than country.
Jesus didn’t come to take to take sides; He came to take over.
“Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world” -Colossians 3:2-4
“The Kingdom” was the go-to sermon for Jesus and the disciples.
Jesus was killed because He was NOT a nationalist.
Jesus was building a community of non-boundaried people who saw their first priority not to a nation but as the Kingdom of Christ.
“For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” -John 3:16
“I’m not concerned with the left-wing or the right-wing… I want the whole bird.” -Billy Graham
3. Citizenship is greater than partisanship.
“When you follow the desires of your sinful nature, the results are very clear: sexual immorality, impurity, lustful pleasures, idolatry, sorcery, hostility, quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambition, dissension, division…Let me tell you again, as I have before, that anyone living that sort of life will not inherit the Kingdom of God. But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives. Let us not become conceited, or provoke one another, or be jealous of one another.” -Galatians 5:19-26
We should aspire to be the conscience of our nation.
4. Unity in Christ is more important than who wins any election.
“I have given them your word. And the world hates them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. I’m not asking you to take them out of the world, but to keep them safe from evil.” -John 17:14-15
Citizen = Civil
Is it the love of power or the power of love?
“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” -Colossians 3:12-14
“Understand this, my dear brothers and sisters: You must all be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to get angry.” -James 1:9
Miles Law: “People stand where they stand because they sit where they sit.”
