Scripture Reading One: Preincarnation
| Reading by Warren Brown |
 |
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with
God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through
him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been
made. ... The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We
have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from
the Father, full of grace and truth. -John 1:1-3,14
The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet
like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. For
this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of
the assembly when you said, "Let us not hear the voice of the LORD
our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die." The LORD
said to me: "What they say is good. I will raise up for them a
prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in
his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him.
-Deuteronomy 18:15-18
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and
the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no
end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from
that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will
accomplish this. -Isaiah 9:6-7
A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from
his roots a Branch will bear fruit. The Spirit of the LORD will rest
on him--the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of
counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the
LORD-- and he will delight in the fear of the LORD. He will not
judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with
his ears; but with righteousness he will judge the needy, with
justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth. He will
strike the earth with the rod of his mouth; with the breath of his
lips he will slay the wicked. Righteousness will be his belt and
faithfulness the sash around his waist. -Isaiah 11:1-5

"But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small
among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will
be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient
times." -Micah 5:2
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The
virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will
call him Immanuel. -Isaiah 7:14
This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:
His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they
came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy
Spirit. Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not
want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her
quietly. But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord
appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be
afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in
her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you
are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from
their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said
through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give
birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel"--which means, "God
with us." When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had
commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he had no union
with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name
Jesus. -Matthew 1:18-25
And there were shepherds living out in the fields
nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the
Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them,
and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be
afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the
people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he
is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find
a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Suddenly a great
company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God
and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men
on whom his favor rests." -Luke 2:8-14
Scripture Reading Three: Christ's Youth

Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who
was righteous and devout. He was waiting for the consolation of
Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. It had been revealed to
him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the
Lord's Christ. Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts.
When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the
custom of the Law required, Simeon took him in his arms and praised
God, saying: "Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss
your servant in peace. For my eyes have seen your salvation, which
you have prepared in the sight of all people, a light for revelation
to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel." The child's
father and mother marveled at what was said about him. Then Simeon
blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: "This child is destined
to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign
that will be spoken against, so that the thoughts of many hearts
will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too." There
was also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe
of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven
years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was
eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day,
fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave
thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking
forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. When Joseph and Mary had
done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to
Galilee to their own town of Nazareth. And the child grew and became
strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon
him. Every year his parents went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the
Passover. When he was twelve years old, they went up to the Feast,
according to the custom. After the Feast was over, while his parents
were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but
they were unaware of it. Thinking he was in their company, they
traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their
relatives and friends. When they did not find him, they went back to
Jerusalem to look for him. After three days they found him in the
temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and
asking them questions. Everyone who heard him was amazed at his
understanding and his answers. When his parents saw him, they were
astonished. His mother said to him, "Son, why have you treated us
like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you."
"Why were you searching for me?" he asked. "Didn't you know I had to
be in my Father's house?" But they did not understand what he was
saying to them. Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was
obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her
heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God
and men. -Luke 2:25-52
Scripture Reading Four: Christ's Ministry/Miracles
| Reading by Tim Frahm |

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me, because
the LORD has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has
sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the
captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim
the year of the LORD'S favor and the day of vengeance of our God, to
comfort all who mourn, -Isaiah 61:1-2
Some men came, bringing to him a paralytic, carried
by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of
the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus and, after
digging through it, lowered the mat the paralyzed man was lying on.
When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, "Son, your
sins are forgiven." Now some teachers of the law were sitting there,
thinking to themselves, "Why does this fellow talk like that? He's
blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?" Immediately Jesus
knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their
hearts, and he said to them, "Why are you thinking these things?
Which is easier: to say to the paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven,'
or to say, 'Get up, take your mat and walk'? But that you may know
that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins. . . ."
He said to the paralytic, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go
home." He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them
all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, "We have
never seen anything like this!" -Mark 2:3-12
Leaving the crowd behind, they took him along, just
as he was, in the boat. There were also other boats with him. A
furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that
it was nearly swamped. Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a
cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you
care if we drown?" He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the
waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was
completely calm. He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid?
Do you still have no faith?" They were terrified and asked each
other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!
-Mark 4:36-41
While they were going out, a man who was
demon-possessed and could not talk was brought to Jesus. And when
the demon was driven out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowd
was amazed and said, "Nothing like this has ever been seen in
Israel." -Matthew 9:32-33

The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed
shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes
in the name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!" When Jesus
entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is
this?" The crowds answered, "This is Jesus, the prophet from
Nazareth in Galilee." -Matthew 21:9-11
As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount
of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise
God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen: "Blessed
is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Peace in heaven
and glory in the highest!" Some of the Pharisees in the crowd
said to Jesus, "Teacher, rebuke your disciples!" "I tell you,"
he replied, "if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out."
-Luke 19:36-40
"Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man
accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which
God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. This man
was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge;
and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by
nailing him to the cross. But God raised him from the dead,
freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible
for death to keep its hold on him." -Acts 2:22-24
Now, brothers, I want to remind you of the gospel I preached
to you, which you received and on which you have taken your
stand. By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the
word I preached to you. Otherwise, you have believed in vain.
For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance:
that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that
he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to
the Scriptures, -I Corinthians 15:1-4

"All things have been committed to me by my Father.
No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father
except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you
rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and
humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke
is easy and my burden is light." -Matthew 11:27-30
