A Band of Angels Coming After Me

Dave Shaner

August 21, 2005

Introduction: Our history has a rich heritage of singing. Many of the songs we sing have reference to angels.

I. We will be like the angels.

A. Matthew 22:23-33

That same day the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, came to him with a question. "Teacher," they said, "Moses told us that if a man dies without having children, his brother must marry the widow and have children for him. Now there were seven brothers among us. The first one married and died, and since he had no children, he left his wife to his brother. The same thing happened to the second and third brother, right on down to the seventh. Finally, the woman died. Now then, at the resurrection, whose wife will she be of the seven, since all of them were married to her?" Jesus replied, "You are in error because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God. At the resurrection people will neither marry nor be given in marriage; they will be like the angels in heaven. But about the resurrection of the dead—have you not read what God said to you, 'I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of the living." When the crowds heard this, they were astonished at his teaching.

B. What does it mean to be like the angels?

II. Four types of "angel" songs:

A. Birth of Christ

1. The birth story of Jesus is filled with references to angels.

2. Hebrews 1:6

And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him."

B. Praise Songs

1. Writers call on angels to praise God

Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his heavenly hosts. - Psalm 148:2

Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will. - Psalm 103:20-21

2. Do angels really sing?

a. Luke 2:13-14

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests."

b. Scriptures:

"Where were you when I laid the earth's foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone-while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?" - Job 38:4-7

Then I looked and heard the voice of many angels, numbering thousands upon thousands, and ten thousand times ten thousand. They encircled the throne and the living creatures and the elders. In a loud voice they sang: "Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!" Then I heard every creature in heaven and on earth and under the earth and on the sea, and all that is in them, singing: "To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be praise and honor and glory and power, for ever and ever!" - Revelation 5:11-13

3. The passion and suffering of Christ

4. Victory

C. Passion Songs

D. Some day we will sing with angels around the throne of God.
