Lord of Hosts

Dave Shaner

June 12, 2005

Introduction:  We cannot fight the enemy alone. He is too strong for us. Our hope in victory rests in the competency of the Lord of hosts.

I. Point out...

A. ... the Lord has ____________.

1. Lord Sabaoth

2. Psalm 148:2

Praise him, all his angels, praise him, all his heavenly hosts.

3. Psalm 103:20-21

Praise the LORD, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the LORD, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will. Praise the LORD, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the LORD, O my soul.

4. Hebrews 12:22

“But you have come to Mount Zion, to the heavenly Jerusalem, the city of the living God. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,”

B. ... the angels have a ____________ of ____________.

1. Angels always pointed to God and not themselves.

2. Angels never sought worship.

Then the angel said to me, "Write: 'Blessed are those who are invited to the wedding supper of the Lamb!' " And he added, "These are the true words of God." At this I fell at his feet to worship him. But he said to me, "Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you & with your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God! - Revelation 19:9-10

3. Angels exist to serve and execute the will of God.

II. Call out...

A. ... when you are cherishing ____________ ____________.

1. I Samuel 1:10-11

In bitterness of soul Hannah wept much & prayed to the LORD. And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD Almighty (of hosts), if you will only look upon your servant’s misery & remember me, & not forget your servant but give her a son, then I will give him to the LORD for all the days of his life

2. Jeremiah 32:17-19a

“Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens & the earth by your great power & outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. You show love to thousands but bring the punishment for the fathers' sins into the laps of their children after them. O great & powerful God, whose name is the LORD Almighty, great are your purposes & mighty are your deeds.

B. ... when you are facing ____________ ____________.

1. I Samuel 17:45-47

David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword & spear & javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the LORD will hand you over to me, & I'll strike you down & cut off your head. Today I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds of the air & the beasts of the earth, & the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD's, & he will give all of you into our hands."

2. What makes you feel overwhelmed?

C. ... when assigned ____________ ____________.

1. Joshua 5:13-14

Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up & saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. Joshua went up to him & asked, “Are you for us or for our enemies?” “Neither,” he replied, “but as commander of the army of the LORD I have now come.” Then Joshua fell facedown to the ground in reverence, & asked him, “What message does my Lord have for his servant?”

2. "The Lord of hosts" was one of the favorite names of the prophets.

3. Isaiah 6:1-9

4. God can accomplish anything he sends me to do.

5. Matthew 28:18

Then Jesus came to them & said, "All authority in heaven & on earth has been given to me."

III. Step out ___________________________________________.

A. God often uses angels to send messages.

B. Romans 8:31

What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us?
