Sunday Sermon

Desperate for God

Dave Shaner

May 8, 2005

Introduction:  All would agree that few things are stronger in this world than the love a mother has for her children.

Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to the region of Tyre & Sidon. A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him & urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." The woman came & knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread & toss it to their dogs." "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. - Matthew 15:21-28

I. An observation: _______________________________________

   _____________________________________________________

A. Matthew 15:1-20

Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre. He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. - Mark 7:24

B. The ones we often never notice are the ones God notices.

C. No matter who you are, you can have this kind of faith.

II. Some Considerations:

A. It was motivated by _______________.

1. She didn't care what others thought.

2. Jeremiah 29:13

You will seek me & find me when you seek me with all your heart.

3. II Corinthians 1:8-10

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered in the province of Asia. We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life. Indeed, in our hearts we felt the sentence of death. But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead.

B. It was demonstrated by ________________.

1. God likes to hear his children ask many times.

2. Luke 18:1

Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray & not give up.

C. It was saturated with ________________.

These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: "Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, preach this message: 'The kingdom of heaven is near.' - Matthew 10:5-7

"First let the children eat all they want," he told her, "for it is not right to take the children's bread & toss it to their dogs." - Mark 7:27

The centurion replied, "Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, & my servant will be healed." - Matthew 8:8

III. Some Implications:

A. Great faith diffuses ____________________________.

B. Great faith refuses ____________________________.

B. Great faith infuses ____________________________.

Conclusion: Pray a desperate prayer about somebody you may have given up on to come to Christ.
