Created for God's Pleasure

Dave Shaner

April 10, 2005

Introduction:  When we see someone who seems to be wasting their life, it is a tragedy. It does not matter how you spend the day God has given you to live.

“You are worthy, our Lord & God, to receive glory & honor & power, for you created all things, & by your will they were created & have their being." - Revelation 4:11

I. Each person exists _______________________________.

A. Ephesians 1:5,9

he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure & will ... And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ

B. You were created for the pleasure of God?

C. John 8:29

The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.”

D. II Corinthians 5:9

So we make it our goal to please him, whether we are at home in the body or away from it.

E. I Thessalonians 4:1

Finally, brothers, we instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you & urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more & more.

F. Ephesians 5:10

... and find out what pleases the Lord.

II. Pleasing God consists:

A. ... of putting ___________________________________.

1. Exodus 34:14

Do not worship any other god, for the LORD , whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.

2. Hebrews 11:6

“Without faith it is impossible to please God”

3. I Thessalonians 2:4

On the contrary, we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel. We are not trying to please men but God, who tests our hearts.

4. Psalm 147:11

... the LORD delights in those who fear him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.

B. ... of choosing _________________________________.

1. Psalm 69:30-31

I will praise God's name in song & glorify him with thanksgiving. This will please the LORD ...

2. Hebrews 13:15-16

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise–the fruit of lips that confess his name. And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

3. Is your worship to God a delight?

4. Psalm 122:1

I rejoiced with those who said to me, "Let us go to the house of the LORD ."

5. Psalm 19:14

May the words of my mouth & the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock & my Redeemer.

C. ... of doing ____________________________________.

1. Psalm 37:23

If the LORD delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm;

2. There is no part of your life that God does not to enjoy.

3. Romans 12:1

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy & pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship.

4. Colossians 1:9-10

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you & asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom & understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord & may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,

III. The scripture insists that God not only wants to enjoy us but that we can enjoy God too!

Therefore my heart is glad & my tongue rejoices; - Psalm 16:5-11
