Grumblers in the Hands of an Angry God

Dave Shaner

August 1, 2004

Introduction: Can you be "good & angry" at the same time? We prefer to think of God's loving arms, not his angry hands.

Text: Exodus 34:4-7

So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the first ones and went up Mount Sinai early in the morning, as the LORD had commanded him; and he carried the two stone tablets in his hands.  Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."

I. A Change on God's Dealings

II. A Chapter on God's Anger - Numbers 11

A. Judgment is more severe when the revelation is more clear.

B. Few things are as contagious as a bad attitude.

C. Psalm 78:24-25

he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven. Men ate the bread of angels; he sent them all the food they could eat.

D. Grumbling can discourage the mightiest man of God.

E. Remember the anger of the Lord in light of His mercies.

F. Kibrath Hattaavah means ____________ of ____________.

G. Psalm 78:38

Yet he was merciful; he forgave their iniquities and did not destroy them. Time after time he restrained his anger and did not stir up his full wrath.

III. A Challenge for God's People:

A. Don't assume ______________________________.

1. Ephesians 4:29

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

2. Be careful to not discourage the people nor the leaders of God.

B. Don't presume ______________________________.

1. Exodus 15:6

Your right hand, O LORD, was majestic in power. Your right hand, O LORD, shattered the enemy.

2. Always apply God's past provisions to our present problems.

C. Don't consume ______________________________.

1. "We are what we eat"

2. John 6:32-35

Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world." "Sir," they said, "from now on give us this bread." Then Jesus declared, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.

Conclusion: Are you satisfied with the bread from heaven, or still craving more? Don't pursue that which you have to grumble to get.
