Introduction:

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.  - Romans 15:13

I. The source of our joy - God

For seven days they celebrated with joy the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because the LORD had filled them with joy by changing the attitude of the king of Assyria, so that he assisted them in the work on the house of God, the God of Israel.  - Ezra 6:22

The precepts of the LORD are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the LORD are radiant, giving light to the eyes.  - Psalm 19:8

...you welcomed the message with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.  - II Thessalonians 1:6b

Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.  - Psalm 51:10-12

II. Is the supply of joy limited?

The LORD has done great things for us, and we are filled with joy.  - Psalm 126:3

The seventy-two returned with joy and said, "Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name." He replied, "I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.  However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure.  - Luke 10:17-21

I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them.  - John 17:13

The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God--he and his whole family.  - Acts 16:34

III. Are there any limitations?

But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  - James 1:6

IV. The result

Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy  - I Peter 1:8

And now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace that God has given the Macedonian churches. Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity.  - II Corinthians 8:1-2

so that through my being with you again your joy in Christ Jesus will overflow on account of me.  - Philippians 1:26

V. How can we have this joy?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  - Galatians 5:22-23a

Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit."  - Acts 2:38
