Praying Like the Lord

Dave Shaner

May 2, 2004

Introduction: We have the opportunity to pray for others in our Prayer Trios. Most of Paul's prayers were for other people. May God help us to be sensitive to others around us, so we can pray...

"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak." - Matthew 26:41

Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them. - Hebrews 7:25

Jesus gave us a pray model to follow.

Text: Matthew 6:9-13

"This, then, is how you should pray: "'Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.'"

I. "Our Father in Heaven"

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. - Psalm 19:1

For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. - Romans 1:20

At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. - Revelation 4:2

In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead - I Peter 1:3b

II. Three Affirmations About God

A. ________________________________________

B. ________________________________________

C. ________________________________________

III. Three Petitions

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. - Hebrews 4:15-16

A. ________________________________________

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. - James 1:17

neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Romans 8:39

B. ________________________________________

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; - Ephesians 4:32

C. ________________________________________

Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. - I Peter 5:8

Conclusion: There are provisions in Jesus' last will and testament that open a storehouse of spiritual riches to you, but you don't get them until you ask for them.

You do not have, because you do not ask God. - James 4:2b
