I. What is the work of the church?
A. ____________ the ____________.
His intent was that now, through the church, the
manifold wisdom of God should be made known to the rulers and
authorities in the heavenly realms, according to his eternal purpose
which he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord. - Ephesians
3:10-11
For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was
lost. - Luke 19:10
He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the
good news to all creation." - Mark 16:15
B. ____________ the ____________.
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be
prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers,
to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ
may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the
knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole
measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants,
tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every
wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their
deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all
things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. From him the
whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows
and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. -
Ephesians 4:11-16
We proclaim him, admonishing and teaching everyone with
all wisdom, so that we may present everyone perfect in Christ.
- Colossians 1:28
C. ____________ the ____________ Together.
All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one
claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared
everything they had. With great power the apostles continued to testify
to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all.
There were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who
owned lands or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and
put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone as he had
need. - Acts 4:32-35
All the believers were together and had everything in
common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he
had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple
courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and
sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.
And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.
- Acts 2:44-47
II. The Work of Shepherds, Overseers and Elders
A. Terms used to describe this office:
1. ____________ or Presbyter.
This they did, sending their gift to the elders by
Barnabas and Saul. - Acts 11:30
Do not neglect your gift, which was given you through
a prophetic message when the body of elders laid their hands on you.
- I Timothy 4:14
2. ____________ or Bishop (KJV).
Since an overseer is entrusted with God's work, he
must be blameless--not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not given to
drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. -
Titus 1:7
Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart
on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Now the overseer must
be above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate,
self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach - I
Timothy 3:1-2
3. ____________ or Pastor.
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a
witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the
glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your
care, serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are
willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to
serve - I Peter 5:1-2
It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be
prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers
- Ephesians 4:11
B. Duties:
1. To be an ____________.
not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being
examples to the flock. - I Peter 5:3
2. ____________.
a. Distribution of funds.
This they did, sending their gift to the elders by
Barnabas and Saul. - Acts 11:30
b. General oversight.
Not that we lord it over your faith, but we work
with you for your joy, because it is by faith you stand firm.
- II Corinthians 1:24
And in the church God has appointed first of all
apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles,
also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those
with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds
of tongues. - I Corinthians 12:28
c. Directs the affairs of the church.
The elders who direct the affairs of the church well
are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching
and teaching. - I Timothy 5:17
3. ____________.
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which
the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of
God, which he bought with his own blood. - Acts 20:28
He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it
has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and
refute those who oppose it. - Titus 1:9
III. The Work of Deacons
A. The term "deacon" means ____________ or minister.
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but
to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many. - Mark
10:45
For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do
wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is
God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.
- Romans 13:4
For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the
Jews on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises made to the
patriarchs - Romans 15:8
I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a servant of the
church in Cenchrea. - Romans 16:1
B. The word translated "deacon" also has a specific
meaning.
Paul and Timothy, servants of Christ Jesus, To all the
saints in Christ Jesus at Philippi, together with the overseers and
deacons: - Philippians 1:1
Deacons, likewise, are to be men worthy of respect,
sincere, not indulging in much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain.
... A deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his
children and his household well. - I Timothy 3:8,12
IV. The Character of Leaders
A. Select men who are known to be full of the Spirit and
wisdom.
B. These scriptures provide some detail on the type of men
that should be selected.
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which
the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of
God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave,
savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even
from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to
draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for
three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with
tears. - Acts 20:28-31
Here is a trustworthy saying: If anyone sets his heart
on being an overseer, he desires a noble task. Now the overseer must be
above reproach, the husband of but one wife, temperate, self-controlled,
respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not
violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must
manage his own family well and see that his children obey him with
proper respect. (If anyone does not know how to manage his own family,
how can he take care of God's church?) He must not be a recent convert,
or he may become conceited and fall under the same judgment as the
devil. He must also have a good reputation with outsiders, so that he
will not fall into disgrace and into the devil's trap. Deacons,
likewise, are to be men worthy of respect, sincere, not indulging in
much wine, and not pursuing dishonest gain. They must keep hold of the
deep truths of the faith with a clear conscience. They must first be
tested; and then if there is nothing against them, let them serve as
deacons. In the same way, their wives are to be women worthy of respect,
not malicious talkers but temperate and trustworthy in everything. A
deacon must be the husband of but one wife and must manage his children
and his household well. Those who have served well gain an excellent
standing and great assurance in their faith in Christ Jesus. -
I Timothy 3:1-13
The reason I left you in Crete was that you might
straighten out what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every
town, as I directed you. An elder must be blameless, the husband of but
one wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of
being wild and disobedient. Since an overseer is entrusted with God's
work, he must be blameless--not overbearing, not quick-tempered, not
given to drunkenness, not violent, not pursuing dishonest gain. Rather
he must be hospitable, one who loves what is good, who is
self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined. He must hold firmly to
the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage
others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it. -
Titus 1:5-9
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a
witness of Christ's sufferings and one who also will share in the glory
to be revealed: Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care,
serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are willing,
as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not
lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.
And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory
that will never fade away. - I Peter 5:1-4
Conclusion: The work of the church is not to select
leaders, but to spread and model the good news of Jesus Christ. Good
leadership enables the church to center on what is important.
