Leaving God Out of His Will

Dave Shaner

November 16, 2003

Introduction: How did Moses get from prince of Egypt to fugitive in Midian? Stephen divided Moses' life into three 40-year segments. God can do a lot when His children include Him in His will.

Text: Exodus 2:11-15

One day, after Moses had grown up, he went out to where his own people were and watched them at their hard labor. He saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his own people. Glancing this way and that and seeing no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. The next day he went out and saw two Hebrews fighting. He asked the one in the wrong, "Why are you hitting your fellow Hebrew?" The man said, "Who made you ruler and judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me as you killed the Egyptian?" Then Moses was afraid and thought, "What I did must have become known." When Pharaoh heard of this, he tried to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh and went to live in Midian, where he sat down by a well.

I. Analyzing the story - Moses was Prince.

A. He was educated to be a great __________.

"At that time Moses was born, and he was no ordinary child. For three months he was cared for in his father's house. When he was placed outside, Pharaoh's daughter took him and brought him up as her own son. Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in speech and action.  - Acts 7:20-22

B. He had a lot of ____________.

He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.  - Hebrews 11:26

C. He was powerful in ____________.

D. Hebrews 11:24-25

By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time.

E. Acts 7:23-25

"When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his fellow Israelites. He saw one of them being mistreated by an Egyptian, so he went to his defense and avenged him by killing the Egyptian. Moses thought that his own people would realize that God was using him to rescue them, but they did not.

F. Moses was more committed to God's __________ than he was to _________.

II. Lessons to Learn

A. God's will must be done in God's ____________.

B. God's will must be done in God's ____________.

In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has not yet reached its full measure.  - Genesis 15:16

C. God's will must be done by God's ____________.

1. It is tempting to pursue a spiritual end through carnal means.

2. Exodus 15:1-6

Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: "I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea. The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. He is my God, and I will praise him, my father's God, and I will exalt him. The LORD is a warrior; the LORD is his name. Pharaoh's chariots and his army he has hurled into the sea. The best of Pharaoh's officers are drowned in the Red Sea. The deep waters have covered them; they sank to the depths like a stone. "Your right hand, O LORD, was majestic in power. Your right hand, O LORD, shattered the enemy.

III. What characterizes God's leader is his constant __________ of __________.

Conclusion: Is there an area of your life where you have been frustrated by a lack of fruitfulness? Be sure to include God in your will.
