Text: James 5:7-12
7 Be patient, then, brothers, until the
Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable
crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains. 8
You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near.
9 Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be
judged. The Judge is standing at the door! 10 Brothers, as
an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke
in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we consider
blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and
have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of
compassion and mercy. 12 Above all, my brothers, do not
swear--not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your "Yes" be yes,
and your "No," no, or you will be condemned.
I. Validation of a working faith is ______________ under
______________.
A. James 1:2-4
Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials
of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops
perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature
and complete, not lacking anything.
B. Romans 5:3-4
Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because
we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and
character, hope.
II. Two Temptations:
A. To ________________ - vs. 9
But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure;
then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit,
impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of
righteousness. - James 3:17-18
B. To ________________ - vs. 12
1. Two problems:
a. ________________
b. It is used to _____________ to God your terms.
2. Lamentations 3:25-26
The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one
who seeks him; it is good to wait quietly for the salvation of the LORD.
III. Three illustrations of good patience.
A. The ______________
I wait for the LORD, my soul waits, and in his word I put my
hope. - Psalm 130:5
B. The ______________
1. Matthew 5:10-12
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of
righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. "Blessed are you when
people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against
you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in
heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before
you.
2. Why does God let righteous, godly people suffer?
a. to develop ______________
b. to give ______________ to your message.
C. ________________ - vs. 11
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for him; do not
fret when men succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked
schemes. Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret--it leads only
to evil. For evil men will be cut off, but those who hope in the LORD will
inherit the land. - Psalm 37:7-9
III. The Lord's return is ______________.
