Tempted & Tried

Dave Shaner

June 8, 2003

Introduction: Outcome is often determined by outlook. Faith makes a difference in the way you handle troubles. The first thing James talks about is how faith must be tried to be true.

Text: James 1:2-4

Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

I. Hear the Truth

A. Trials are ______________. - James 1:2

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.  - I Corinthians 10:13

In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.  - Luke 10:30

B. Trials are ______________. - James 1:3-4

Test me, O LORD, and try me, examine my heart and my mind; for your love is ever before me, and I walk continually in your truth.  - Psalm 26:2-3

II. What trials can do:

A. ____________ my ____________.

B. ____________ my ____________.

1. God puts a premium on patience

You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.  - Hebrews 10:36

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  - Hebrews 12:1

2. Patience is not just passive resignation, but active steadfastness.

No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.  - I Corinthians 10:13

C. ____________ my ____________.

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.  - Romans 5:3-4

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the likeness of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.  - Romans 8:28-29

Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.  - James 1:4

II. Have you tried ....

A. ____________ by ____________?

B. ____________ the ____________?
