The All-Seeing Eye of God

Mike Reeves

May 4, 2003

Introduction: Some of man's most important questions:

  • Job, "If a man dies, will he live again?" Job 14:14

  • The Philippian jailer, "What must I do to be saved?"

  • Four times Jesus asks, "What do you think of me?"

  • I should ask, "What does God think of me?"

I. How do I see God?

O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.  - Psalm 139:1-6

II. In my desire to know Him, I must remember -- He knows me first!

A. Verse 1 - He has searched me.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.  - Romans 8:26-27

B. Verses 1 & 2 - God knows me!
C. Verse 2 - God perceives my thoughts.
D. Verse 3 - He knows my comings and goings.
E. Verse 3 - He is familiar with my ways.
F. Verse 4 - God knows my words before I speak them!

III. Is the all-seeing eye of God of Psalm 139 too much for us?

IV. But when I'm bad, can I hide from him?

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.  - Psalm 139:7-12

How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.  - Psalm 139:17-18

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.  - Psalm 139:23-24

Conclusion:

So, the questions:

- How do I / you see God?

- What does He think of me / you?
