It Is Good to Go to the House of the Lord

Dave Shaner

April 27, 2003

Introduction: Psalm 122 is part of a group called the Psalms of ascent. This writer was bout a man who was excited about going to church. Are you excited to be able to go to the house of the Lord?

I. It is good to go:

A. ... to be in God's ______________.

But if an unbeliever or someone who does not understand comes in while everybody is prophesying, he will be convinced by all that he is a sinner and will be judged by all, and the secrets of his heart will be laid bare. So he will fall down and worship God, exclaiming, "God is really among you!"  - I Corinthians 14:24-25

B. ... to be with God's ______________.

1. Psalm 42:1-4

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, "Where is your God?" These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.

2. Why should we go to church?

a. God's ______________ it.

b. God knows that it __________________.

II. It is better to go:

A. ... in corporate worship, God's __________ is ____________.

B. ... in corporate worship, God's __________ is ____________.

Come, let us sing for joy to the LORD; let us shout aloud to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before him with thanksgiving and extol him with music and song. For the LORD is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land. Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the LORD our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care. Today, if you hear his voice  - Psalm 95:1-7

Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O LORD.  - Psalm 89:15

C. ... in corporate worship, God's __________ is ____________.

He will judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice. The mountains will bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness. He will defend the afflicted among the people and save the children of the needy; he will crush the oppressor. He will endure as long as the sun, as long as the moon, through all generations. ... Let grain abound throughout the land; on the tops of the hills may it sway. Let its fruit flourish like Lebanon; let it thrive like the grass of the field. May his name endure forever; may it continue as long as the sun. All nations will be blessed through him, and they will call him blessed.  - Psalm 72:2-5, 16-17

III. It is best to go:

A. When you are ______________ to be ______________.

B. When you are ______________ to be ______________.

How good and pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!  - Psalm 133:1

Conclusion: God gave us two things to remember: to love God and to love people. Corporate worship helps me remember both.
