The Greatest Gift

Dave Shaner

December 22, 2002

Introduction: Christmas is a time of giving.  Many gifts will be returned or exchanged.  There's one gift that will never wear out, break or need repairing.  It is appropriate for anyone regardless of your background.  The gift we all need, the most valuable gift of all, is that baby in the manger.

Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! - 2 Corinthians 9:15

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16

God's Gift to You:

I. The Gift Is ____________________.

A. God wants to be your friend.

The LORD would speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks with his friend. Then Moses would return to the camp, but his young aide Joshua son of Nun did not leave the tent. - Exodus 33:11

B. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you. - John 15:15

C. Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. - John 17:3

D. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. - I John 1:3

E. The essence of Christianity isn't about rules, but a relationship with Jesus Christ.

II. The Gift Has ____________________.

A. Many don't see the value in knowing Christ.

B. Many want the gold instead of the child.

C. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it. - Matthew 13:44-46

D. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ. - Philippians 3:8

E. Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift! - II Corinthians 9:15

III. The Gift Must Be ____________________.

A. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God - John 1:12

B. God's love can not be earned.

C. A gift you have to pay for is no gift at all.

Conclusion: This is a time of giving. I would like to encourage you to open the gift God has for you. Don't leave Christ on the shelf or unopened under the tree.
