His Name is Wonderful

Dave Shaner

December 8, 2002

Introduction: Sometimes Christians need to explain terms we use to the uninitiated. Let's explore the names of Jesus especially at this time of year.

Text: Isaiah 9:1-7

Nevertheless, there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress. In the past he humbled the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the future he will honor Galilee of the Gentiles, by the way of the sea, along the Jordan--The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned. You have enlarged the nation and increased their joy; they rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest, as men rejoice when dividing the plunder. For as in the day of Midian's defeat, you have shattered the yoke that burdens them, the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor. Every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning, will be fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever. The zeal of the LORD Almighty will accomplish this.

Text: Matthew 4:13-16

Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali--to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah: "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali, the way to the sea, along the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles--the people living in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."

I. Observations

A. God will bring ______________ through a child.

B. The child will be both ____________ & ____________.

C. The kingdom will ______________ under God's might hand.

II. Implications

A. Wonderful means his person is ______________.

and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them  - Luke 2:18

All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. "Isn't this Joseph's son?" they asked.  - Luke 4:22

Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, "We have seen remarkable things today."  - Luke 5:26

B. Counselor means his will is ______________.

Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.  - John 6:68

Your statutes are my delight; they are my counselors.  - Psalm 119:24

You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ. ... As one who is in the Lord Jesus, I am fully convinced that no food is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for him it is unclean.  - Romans 8:9,14

C. Mighty God means his power is still ______________.

The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.  - Luke 1:35

Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.  - Luke 4:14

When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases,  - Luke 9:1

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding. And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.
  - Colossians 1:9-12

D. Everlasting Father means his promise is ______________.

"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.  - John 3:16

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?"  - John 11:25-26

He did not enter by means of the blood of goats and calves; but he entered the Most Holy Place once for all by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. The blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a heifer sprinkled on those who are ceremonially unclean sanctify them so that they are outwardly clean. How much more, then, will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself unblemished to God, cleanse our consciences from acts that lead to death, so that we may serve the living God! For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance--now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant.  - Hebrews 9:12-15

Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, let us be thankful, and so worship God acceptably with reverence and awe,  - Hebrews 12:28

E. Prince of Peace means his rest is ______________.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord.  - John 20:19-20

Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you.  - II Thessalonians 3:16

Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.  - Colossians 3:15

Conclusion: The most important thing you can do now is to allow king Jesus to rule in your heart.
