Victory in Heaven & on Earth

Dave Shaner

November 17, 2002

Introduction: To try to escape conflict is often more costly than to engage in it. In Christian warfare, we are not to evade conflict, but are to actually invade the enemy's territory.

Romans 8:37

No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.

I. He's Overruled:

A. Satan is _______________ and has lost the ____________.

1. Satan was cast out of heaven.
2. Satan is decisively defeated, but as yet has not been executed.

B. ...But Satan has not ____________________.

1. He can't direct his anger at Christ, so he attacks His followers.
2. As the battle gets fierce, will soldiers of Christ stay at their post?

II. They Overcame:

A. By the _______________ of the _______________

Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right side to accuse him. The LORD said to Satan, "The LORD rebuke you, Satan! The LORD, who has chosen Jerusalem, rebuke you! Is not this man a burning stick snatched from the fire?" Now Joshua was dressed in filthy clothes as he stood before the angel. The angel said to those who were standing before him, "Take off his filthy clothes." Then he said to Joshua, "See, I have taken away your sin, and I will put rich garments on you."  - Zechariah 3:1-4

When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross. And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.  - Colossians 2:13-15

Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out. But I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all men to myself." He said this to show the kind of death he was going to die.  - John 12:31-33

and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father--to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.  - Revelation 1:5-6

B. By the _______________ of their _______________

That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  - Romans 10:9

Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess.  - Hebrews 3:1

"Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.  - Matthew 10:32-33

When he opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God and the testimony they had maintained.  - Revelation 6:9

C. By the _______________ of their _______________

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.  - Mark 8:35

Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life.  - Revelation 2:10

III. You Overlook the Present ____________________.

Conclusion: Satan's time is short. Don't line up with the pressure to line up on the losing side. It may seem tough, but don't be afraid to step up to the plate.

I Corinthians 16:13

Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong.
