Mind Field

Dave Shaner

October 20, 2002

Introduction: Have you ever tried to plant a thought in someone else's mind? Satan can be very effective in planting land minds. To fight the good fight, we must clear the mind field of Satanic thought bombs.

Text: II Corinthians 10:3-5

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

I. Satan maims by ____________ us into deceiving ______________.

A. Paul can't talk about the devil without talking about the mind.

1. II Corinthians 4:4; 11:3; 2:11

The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

For if I grieve you, who is left to make me glad but you whom I have grieved?

2. We are to tear down fortresses that Satan builds.

B. Christians have divine power to demolish fortresses.

II. Scripture Claims...

A. ... that strongholds can be ______________.

1. The question is, 'am I willing?'
2. Ephesians 4:22-23

You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be made new in the attitude of your minds;

B. ... strongholds can be removed because our minds can be renewed.

1. Romans 12:2

Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will.

2. It is not enough to believe in Jesus. We must believe like Jesus.

III. Clearing the Mindfield...

A. Get in the habit of ______________ thinking.

1. Don't open the door.
2. Capture every thought and make it obedient to Christ.

B. Let what we ______ __________ of God __________ the fight.

1. Satan tries to alter our perception of God.
2. Colossians 2:4

I tell you this so that no one may deceive you by fine-sounding arguments.

C. Set our ____________ on things ____________.

1. The best way to keep thoughts of hell out is to keep thoughts of heaven in.
2. Colossians 3:2

Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Conclusion: Spiritual warfare is not about how to defeat the devil as much as it is about how close we can get to God. The closer I am to the shepherd, the less afraid I am of the wolf. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your mind.
