What Really Matters?

Mike Reeves

August 11, 2002

Introduction: We think we know what really matters - a car to drive, nice clothes, air conditioning, etc.  But do they really matter? To Jesus? In Scripture? What really matters? The Cross.

"You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." - Matthew 16:22

"I profess to know nothing except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified." - I Corinthians 2:2

"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the scriptures." - I Corinthians 15:3-4

What Really Matters?

1. Being a part of the body of Christ, his church.

"...I will build my church and even hell will not overcome it." - Matthew 16:22

"He is the head of the body, the church." - Colossians 1:18

"Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood." - Acts 20:28

2. Baptism of believers by immersion for forgiveness of sins.

"For we are all baptized by one Spirit into one body." - I Corinthians 12:13

"Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins." - Acts 2:38

"Or don't you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like this in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection." - Romans 6:3-5

3. Encountering the cross of Christ demands changed behavior.

"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness? What harmony is there between Christ and Belial? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: 'I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you. I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.'" - II Corinthians 6:14-18

4. Weekly participation in the Lord's Supper.

"And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.'" - Luke 22:19

"For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, 'This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.' In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, 'This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.' For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes." - I Corinthians 11:23-26

Conclusion: What really matters are the basic, unmistakable instructions God gives us in his word. Have you complied with these instructions?
