Dealing With a Brother's Fault

Dave Shaner

June 23, 2002

Introduction: When a brother has a fault, we tend to focus on the fault. The Bible gives instruction on how to deal with it, but is that all? There is another way that Jesus taught.

I. The Principle Stated: Cultivate the ability to look beyond the fault and see what may be a basic need within his/her life.

A. Label sin for what it is.
B. Faults and weaknesses often are outward symptoms of deeper needs.

II. The Validity of the Principle:

A. It is ____________ in the very __________ of __________ Himself.

1. It is the principle that God dealt with you.
2. Psalm 130:3-4
3. Romans 5:6-10
4. Titus 3:2-5
5. Colossians 3:12-14
6. Ephesians 4:30-32
7. Matthew 18:23-25

B. This __________ is ____________ in the life of __________.

1. Matthew 9:9-13
2. See people not for what they are, but for what they can become.
3. Psalm 130:3-4
4. John 8:1-11
5. Don't try to deal with someone's fault unless you love them.
6. It is easy to throw stones when Jesus isn't there.
7. Matthew 9:13

Conclusion: God desires mercy not sacrifice. Jesus looks beyond your sin and longs to show mercy. Let's cultivate a spirit where forgiveness and mercy prevails.
