The Gift of Mothers

Dave Shaner

May 12, 2002

Introduction: Mothers are a blessing to our church. Mother's Day, like being a mother, can be a good-news/bad-news situation.

I. Children bring great ____________.

A. Sarah and Abraham

1. Genesis 12; 15:6
2. Romans 4:8

B. Children and laughter - Genesis 17:17; 18:10-12
C. Every child is a gift from God. - Psalm 127:3

II. Children may also bring ____________.

A. Children are a blessing, but they don't start out laughing! - Genesis 3:16
B. A greater pain may be called ____________.

1. Luke 2:25-35
2. Romans 8:28

C. But what began as a curse in Genesis 3 is a blessing in Genesis 4.

III. Mothers give the gift of love.

A. Being a mother is not a steady stream of Hallmark moments.
B. Ultimately, Mother's Day suffers the same failure as Christmas.

1. You can't honor Christ for all He's done with one special day.
2. You can't honor mothers with one day.

C. God gave us the very best gift of love.

Conclusion: As mothers and fathers are blessings to their children, you can count on God being a blessing to you. The greatest gift both mothers and fathers can give their children is a life that seeks to please God.
