Reflecting the Image of Jesus

Dave Shaner

March 17, 2002

Introduction: Two pieces of lumber suspend the greatest claim in history. We believe with all of our hearts that this execution was the son of God. This was the most important day in history. Jesus did this because he had a dream.

Jesus had seven different sayings from the cross:
1. Forgive them for they do not know what they are doing...
2. Today you will be with me in paradise.
3. Mother, behold your son... here is your mother...
4. My God, my God why have you forsaken me?
5. I'm thirsty.
6. It is finished.
7. Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.

I. What is forgiveness?

A. Pardon, cancellation of a debt, release from captivity.
B. Make no mistake, we have a huge debt.
C. Once God forgives, it is gone.

II. God is a God of Forgiveness

A. God delights in forgiving.
B. God pardons abundantly.

III. Man & Forgiveness

A. Remember that God's ways are not out ways.
B. Have you ever needed forgiveness and no one would give it?
C. Let forgiveness motivate you to live for Christ.

IV. Relief & Release from Sin

A. Sin isn't academic or mechanical but personal alienation from God.
B. God knows your nature.
C. God understands you and the complexity of your problems.

V. Results of God's Forgiveness

A. God treats you as if you had never wronged him.
B. Our fellowship/relationship with God is restored.
C. A renewed source of power and energy begins to flow into your life.

Conclusion: Will you be a part of the dream? It's the dream of Jesus. He loves you and is asking you to come and be cleansed of all your sins right now.
