Christmas: Important if True

Dave Shaner

December 23, 2001

Introduction: Three words should be carved in stone over all church doors: "Important if True." If the birth of Christ is really true as written, does it change the way you live?

I. The four Gospels affirm that Jesus was __________ in the __________.

A. Luke was an historian and investigated the matter thoroughly. - Luke 1:1-4
B. Jesus is either a Liar, a Legend, a Lunatic, or the Lord!

II. God made us, loves us, and will not - in spite of our sinfulness - leave us to the horrible fate we deserve.

A. He ____________ you and wants you to be ___________.

1. Ephesians 1:3-14
2. He sought us before we ever sought Him.
3. If this isn't true, then it's important.

B. Jesus came and lived among us to pay the __________ we owed because of sin.

1. Matthew 1:21
2. Romans 3:10
3. Romans 3:23

C. Jesus invites us to belong to him by ____________.

1. Ephesians 2:8-9
2. The entire birth story is on of an undeserved bestowing of grace.

D. The Lord's Supper is a divine gift to affirm to each other how much we believe in that not-so-simple story.

E. Because the Gospel is true, the Christmas story must be told.

F. I Timothy 2:5-7

Conclusion: The story of Christ is one of love and needs to be told over and over without it getting old. It is an invitation for people to come to Christ to receive what they could never do for themselves. It is an appeal for weary, discouraged souls to come and be cleansed by the blood of Christ. Because it is true, this is the most important matter in the world for each of us.
