Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 31:
Defeating the Giant of Deception

In times past, the greatness of America has been reflected in the integrity of her people. Recent developments lead us to ask, “What has happened to the reverence for truth and honesty that once characterized our society?” Also, we wonder, “Why is it that we so seldom hear the expression, His word is a good as his bond?” In our era of declining morality, we recall the words of Solomon, “The integrity of the upright shall guide them; but the perverseness of the treacherous shall destroy them.” (Prov. 11:3) Integrity excludes lying, stealing, cheating and every form of deception. It is a broad, inclusive term referring to one of the deepest and most important qualities of a worthy life. It describes the man who is worthy of complete trust.

Writers of all of the various ages have commended integrity as a basic ingredient of character. In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Polonius gives this advice to Laertes, “This above all; to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.” The attainment and maintenance of integrity requires constant vigilance. The high, spiritual qualities, demanded and exemplified by our Lord, are not unreachable. The higher ground of spiritual enlightenment is man’s constant challenge.

The Christian must realize that a departure from integrity is a departure from Christ. No man is immune to temptation. It is essential that our faith be strengthened by a greater knowledge and reverence for His Holy Word.

CLAIM THESE SCRIPTURES TO SPEAK TO YOUR LIFE:

  1. “Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity than he that is perverse in his lips and is a fool.” (Prov. 19:1)
  2. “A righteous man that walketh in his integrity, blessed are his children after him.” (Prov. 20:7)
  3. I especially like the words of David, “Jehovah, who shall sojourn in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill? He that walketh uprightly, and worketh righteousness. And speaketh truth in his heart.” Deut. 16:19-20.

Open honesty, no false front, no mask, this is what is needed in society today. May our lives be such that people will be able to trust us fully and completely. May there be no deception. CHRIST LIVED SUCH A LIFE BEFORE US. HE TAUGHT THE HIGHEST OF PRINCIPLES AND THEN LIVED HIS LIFE IN PERFECT INTEGRITY AND CONFORMITY TO THOSE PRINCIPLES. LET US DO LIKEWISE!

Shepherd's Corner

Praise God for answered prayers. Many of you have offered up prayers to our Heavenly Father concerning our Pulpit Minister position. Dr. Michael Lewis and his wife Carmen have answered the Lord's call and are currently closing on a house and getting ready for the move here in early August. Michael's first Sunday for the Dalton Gardens Church is scheduled for August 13. This congregation is looking forward to a "Fresh Beginning" and is planning to enjoy a Day of Dedication on 8-13-06. Following the morning Worship Services we will all enjoy a barbeque/pot luck meal together. Then the refurbished facilities, new Youth Center and Prayer Garden will be dedicated to the Lord. The community will be invited to come enjoy the fellowship and food.....All members are encouraged to invite their family & friends and participate in this Day of Dedication.  -The elders

WEEKLY BULLETIN

The GNEW Reunion
The RENEWAL Workshop begins at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday evening, July 26, and concludes at noon on Saturday, July 29, at the Everett (WA) Conference Center. This regional program for Pacific Northwest churches of Christ promises to renew our spirits with the theme, “THE JOURNEY: Up, On, and Beyond the Mountain with God.” Jeff Walling, Aaron Walling, Wade Hodges, Jeff Hicks, Joe Beam, and Marvin Phillips are keynote speakers. A full teen program (“TLC”) and a children’s program are available. Visit our website: renewalnorthwest.com, call (360) 794-8330, or pick up a brochure for the full schedule on the kiosk. Don’t miss this opportunity for spiritual renewal through worship, classes, and Christian fellowship!

Church Photo Directory
Update

Olan Mills will be photographing our members for the upcoming church directory on Friday and Saturday, December 1 and 2. We will be scheduling the time and date for your photographs to be taken. You will also be offered photograph packages in time for Christmas (prices will be announced later). So, please keep these dates in mind. We want to have everyone in attendance within our directory.

ALSO, we need church activity photographs (baptisms, VBS, devos, camp outings, picnics, and any other activity you can imagine involving our fellowship together). These are for the first few pages of the directory. If you have high resolution photographs or traditional snapshots, Dave Johnson needs them. Please see him for more details.

Secret Sisters
Remember to contact and encourage your Secret Sister at least once a month! Keep her in your prayers. Also, remember the Secret Sister bulletin board is by the WBS board for you to post thank you notes to the Secret Sister who got your name. Don’t forget to check it!

“A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”

Who’s Designing Our Clothes?
A few weeks ago I was shopping with a friend and her teen daughters noticing the styles that are in. Now mind you, being a mother of three sons I have not kept up with girls fashions much so maybe some of these choices have been there for longer then I know about. When we looked at the shorts and cute denim skirts it reminded me of the mini and micro mini shorts and skirts of my high school days. Oh, how I hated those days of trying to find something modest to wear. Even though I was tall and thin in those days I didn’t want to show my flat tummy or how long my legs really were to the whole world like the fashion designers would want you to believe you should. Nor did I want to sport words or Logos on my behind or chest to draw extra attention to places that I was self-conscience about already!

Fashion designers want us to buy their clothes because they are marketing sex appeal and say to the world this is where your self esteem comes from is looking sexy to the opposite sex...The Guys. (Or the Girls if you guys are reading). But who do we want people to know we belong to....the World or God. What we chose to wear is an important part of saying who we belong to. In I Timothy 2:9-10 it talks about women wearing proper clothes that show respect & self-control....to say to others we are women who worship God. And when we are looking for acceptance and self-esteem, God and the Word is where we should be looking.

Next time we go shopping or to our closets and get dressed for the day remember, I have made a commitment to God to live and walk the Christian life style. Now, what should I wear today?

I Love you all, Karmen

New Car Stuck In Red Tape
The new car we helped to purchase for missionaries, David and Becky Reeves, is being held in port by the Togolese government for required taxes. Trying to work this out with the African port officials has not been successful. They have refused to honor our non-profit tax status. $3700 of the $5000 required to free the car has been raised. Our help is needed to raise the remaining $1300. You may assist with this need by writing a check to the church here marked "African Mission," or writing a check to the Reeves' sponsoring congregation, the Richland church of Christ, and marking it "automobile tax." Let's help them get their much-need car out of customs.
