Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 30:
Defeating the Giant of Unworkable Marriages

What Makes a Marriage Work?
Just as there are attitudes and habits which hinder a marriage, there are also attitudes and qualities which help to make a marriage work. Among these I would list the following: Love, fidelity, loyalty, sacrifice, kindness, sympathy, wisdom, frankness, fairness, forbearance, patience, steadfastness, unselfishness, honesty, purity, growth, mutual interest, honor, respect, character, prayer and integrity.

Emotional maturity is certainly essential to a permanently happy marriage. The ability to get along with people, the ability to face both routine and crisis without becoming upset, the ability to subordinate self-interest for the common good - these are some of the materials of which a successful marriage is built. But ABOVE ALL ELSE AS THE APOSTLE PAUL HAS WRITTEN “Love suffereth long, and is kind; Love envieth not; Love vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not its own, is not provoked, taketh not account of evil; rejoiceth not in unrighteousness, but rejoiceth with the truth; beareth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. LOVE NEVER FAILETH” I Cor. 13:4-8.

The ability to succeed in marriage is securely tied to the ability to continue trying. Perseverance is a major item in any field, particularly in marriage and the achievement of the ultimate goal - a home in heaven. Making marriage work involves give and take, trial and error, love and forgiveness, determination and perseverance, but above all else it requires putting GOD AND HIS KINGDOM FIRST. To be one’s self and to make that self better and more loveable each day should be the GOAL OF EVERY HUSBAND AND WIFE.

When two people are genuine, dedicated Christians, they have the guidelines and incentives that are necessary to work through any different situation and to make their marriage a meaningful one.

Shepherd's Corner

The Hall of Fame
The basketball Hall of Fame received one man as a player in 1960 and as a coach in 1972 - A RARITY. Teams coached by him won ten NCAA championships in twelve years - a fantastic record. John R. Wooden has unparalleled success as a team builder. What was his method? He instructed his players to always give an acknowledgement of the assist when a goal was made. Many players would say, “But coach, he may not be looking” Wooden’s reply was, “He will be watching.”

Everyone is watching and listening for politeness, gratitude and encouragement. Those who give words and deeds of kindness should have their own Hall of Fame. “I shall pass through this world but once. If therefore, there by any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do, let me do it now; let me not defer it or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again.” E. DeGrellet

“Lord, make me an instrument of thy peace. Where there is hatred let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; where there is sadness, joy. O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving, that we receive.” Francis of Assisi.

You will be in God’s Hall of Fame if you do these things.  -The elders

In Sympathy

“He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken”
-Psalm 62:2

Teen Scene

The Priest Lake trip was awesome! I'm sorry that so many were unable to attend. Those of us who went had a great time. The water was perfect, the weather was perfect, and the fellowship was fantastic! Everyone thought that we should make this an annual event and I tend to agree.

Next Saturday the Fredriksons have invited us out to their place for a day of fun, food and fellowship. I hope that all the teens can be there on the 22nd. Please see the flyer in your mailbox concerning this event.

I need to know right away who is going to Sr. teen camp. If there are enough going we will make arrangements to take the van but if only a few are going it will be parent’s responsibility to get you there.

The summer months can be rather hectic with every-one going different directions. Our numbers have been down a lot in Bible class on Sunday as well as at SHARE on Wednesday nights. Let's not lose our focus. Let's remember where we really need to be. When some are not there we really miss you. Plan on being in class as much as possible!  -Scott
