Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 29:
Defeating the Giant of Unworkable Marriages

What Makes a Marriage Work?
We have a strong tradition which says: Boy meets girl, they fall in love, they get married, and they live happily ever after. But how is it in real life? All too often marriage which began with such high hopes suffers because of lack of preparation, selfishness, neglect, and the many external stresses which are inevitable. Somewhere along the way there comes a lack of communication, misunderstanding, criticism, blame, charge and counter charge, and ultimately, divorce, or quiet desperation.

Elton Trueblood in his book, The Common Ventures of Life, points out that mere physical beauty will not suffice to make a marriage work. As I read this statement my mind went back to the Old Testament statement of Samuel, “Jehovah seeth not as man seeth: for man looketh upon the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart” I Sam. 16:7. We also remember the fine statement concerning the ideal woman found in the writings of Solomon, “Grace is deceitful, and beauty is vain; but a woman that feareth Jehovah, she shall be praised” Prov. 31:30. THERE MUST BE A STRONG MORAL SENSE, AND UNCONDITIONAL COMMITMENT TO GOD AND HIS PRINCIPLES, IF THE MARRIAGE IS TO HAVE THE FOUNDATION THAT WILL MAKE IT SUCCESSFUL.

Judge Mildred Lillie has given a thoughtful list of the major causes of troubles between husbands and wives. On the side of the wife the faults are: nagging, insufficient interest in the home, carelessness about personal attractiveness and physical relationships of marriage, carelessness with money, belittling husbands before others, and excessive activities outside the home.

On the husband’s side the faults are: excessive drinking, refusal to let wife handle funds, tyrannical attitudes, refusal to assume home responsibilities, failure to confide in his wife, and spending too much time away from home.
