Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 27:
Defeating the Giant of Pessimism, Part II

Someone has said that history is a mirror of the present. Edward Gibbon, in his outstanding history, has set forth his now famous “five reasons for the decline and fall of the Roman Empire.” Briefly, these are those reasons: FIRST, he says, the rapid increase of divorce with the undermining of the sanctity of the home which is the basis of society. SECOND, higher and higher taxes; the spending of public money for bread, celebrations and for fighting many wars at the same time. THIRD, the mad craze for pleasure; sports becoming more exciting and more brutal. FOURTH, the building of gigantic armaments, when the real enemy was within; the decadence of the people. And finally and FIFTH, the decay of religion; faith fading into mere form, losing touch with life and becoming impotent to guide it. THAT HISTORY IS A MIRROR OF THE PRESENT AGE IN THE UNITED STATES.

In the midst of living with these same problems in our country, let us realize in spite of our nation’s problems that the Christian is to look to Christ with Christian optimism (in spite of manifold national and private problems). Paul in writing to the Philippians, says, “Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice… In nothing be anxious; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God and the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus… I CAN DO ALL THINGS IN HIM WHO STRENGTHENETH ME” (Phil. 4:4,6,13)

It is said that when the Christian era began, the population of the world was only about two hundred and ten million people. Today there are more than seven billion people on the earth. These are remarkable times in which to be alive. What we need is self -control instead of license. We need generosity instead of greed. We need concern for others instead of for self. We need love instead of hate, and

Shepherd's Corner

In Daniel 3 we read of a story about King Nebuchadnezzar and his golden image. After erecting this golden image he commanded everyone to bow down and worship it. He was informed that Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego refused to do this. In anger he warned them to do this or he would cast them in a furnace of blazing fire. They responded that they would not, that God would deliver them, and even if God did not they were not going to serve his gods or worship the golden image.

Joshua said something very similar in Joshua 24:15 when he told the Israelites to choose if they were going to serve the Lord, or the gods of the Amorites, "but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

In this life we also face many challenges that can distract us from God. Sometimes these are more obvious such as a threat like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego faced. Other times it is from temptations like the Israelites faced. After all it is so much easier to be conformed to this world, and to just do things to be liked by everyone. Sometimes we think that we are doing things right and that everything is fine. In this life what we need to do is to make a commitment to God, and to stay with that commitment. Just as the examples that we read of previously, we need a commitment of faith like the example we read of in Hebrews 11. In Hebrews 12 we find that our greatest example is Jesus. In following his example we are not to "conform to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind..." (Romans 12:2).

Are we stepping up to our commitment?

-The elders

with it all we need love and respect for God.

To billions in this world the mission and vital ingredient should be Christ - Christ to guide us . You and I, as we see this, find an answer to the world’s problems an assurance and a hope and an urgency. WHEN WE LOOK AT THE PROBLEMS OF OUR WORLD, WE BECOME DISCOURAGED: BUT WHEN WE REALIZE THAT CHRIST IS THE ANSWER TO THE WORLD’S PROBLEMS, WE FIND HOPE AND OPTIMISM! CHRIST IN YOU THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF GLORY!

College Group: Bowling at Triple Play on June 30th! Keep your night free! For more details, call the Swaims (964-0126) or the Hammars (818-9099).

Teen Scene

Well, summer is here. By the time this is printed music camp 2006 will be history. Several of our teens were able to attend and enjoyed a week of fun, fellowship and singing. This week is all teen camp led by Scott Koopman and Micah Riesenweber. I'm excited about things that we have planned for the summer. Our teen center (Bus Barn) is all completed and ready to use. The teens want to thank those who had a part in making this a reality. Special thanks to Dan Sims for spearheading the project, and of course Don Rude and Lamont Petersen for all their work. This is a nice facility now and we will enjoy using it.

Less than 2 weeks away is our campout at Priest Lake. This will be an awesome weekend. We will use this time to induct our incoming 7th graders to the youth group. Everyone received a flyer on this in your mailboxes. It is very important to RSVP by next Sunday if you are going. Also we need parents to go as well and parents received a flyer, also.

July 22, we will spend the day at the Fredrikson's at Spirit Lake. More info will be coming about this. Teens, as you have free time this summer remember to spend some of it with God. Your personal time with Him is the most valuable time you have. And also remember to spend time serving others. Your acts of service are being noticed not only by God but by members of the congregation as well! Have a wonderful week.  -Scott

CAMP PRINCES' PINE

It’s time to start planning for summer camps at Camp Prince’s Pines:
All Teen Camp - June 25 - July 1 (7th-12th)
Senior Camp - July 30 - Aug.5 (9th-12th)
Junior Camp - August 6-12 (6th-8th)
Preteen Camp - Aug. 13-18 (3rd-5th)
