Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 26:
Defeating the Giant of Pessimism, Part I

Optimism, in our troubled world, is a rather scarce commodity. Worse still, Christian optimism, the great ingredient that activated the early Christians in the long ago, is even more scarce. And where optimism is wanting, pessimism rushes in. Someone has defined a pessimist as one who, when he’s confronted with a choice between two evils, takes both of them. And yet, to say as Robert Browning did, “God’s in His heaven - All’s right with the world,” is unrealistic. God certainly is in His heaven, but it’s quite obvious that not all is right with the world.

I’m afraid that pessimism is growing in our day, and Christian optimism becomes more and more difficult as the generations pass. AND YET IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE. In a world such as ours, how the Christian maintains optimism, in this world that has in it a great deal of evil and rebellion, is a matter of individual attitude. FIRST we must face the fact that our world does have in it a great deal of evil, and we must recognize the fact that the Christian is not above or beyond these evil problems. The Christian is not immune to the problems of the world about him. SECOND, we must confidently believe that with God’s help we CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT OUR PROBLEMS. In the 11th Psalm (vs. 3), David said, “If the foundations be destroyed, what can the righteous do?” And in Proverbs 14:34 Solomon said, “Righteousness exalteth a nation; But sin is a reproach to any people.” To encourage us with optimism the Apostle Paul wrote in Rom. 8:28, “And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose...If God is for us, who is against us?”

Also in the 8th chapter of the Roman letter, verses 16 and 17, we are told, “The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit…”This means that the Holy Spirit, as He speaks through his Word, bears witness with our own consciousness that we’re children of God. When we have done what the Holy Spirit guides us to do, then we HAVE THIS TRUE GREAT OPTIMISTIC CONFIDENCE. THIS IS A PASSAGE OF GREAT OPTIMISM AND GREAT CHRISTIAN HOPE. CHRISTIAN OPTIMISM BEGINS WHEN WE BECOME CHRISTIANS. THEN WE HAVE THE LIMITLESS RESOURCES OF CHRIST TO GIVE US STRENGTH IN TIME OF TROUBLE. And, finally, from a Roman prison in a turbulent pagan world, the Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Tim. 1:12 “I KNOW HIM WHOM I HAVE BELIEVED AND AM PERSUADED THAT HE IS ABLE TO GUARD THAT WHICH I HAVE COMMITTED UNTO HIM AGAINST THAT DAY.” NOW THAT’S CHRISTIAN OPTIMISM!

To be continued.

Shepherd's Corner

Happy Father's Day!
Being a father I continue to meditate on what it means to be a father. I examine the scriptures and look at the examples given to us. In doing this we don't have to look far and we see God as our ultimate example as a father.

Our God is the father of all mankind. As a father he loved mankind so much that he was willing to send his only son to save us (John 3:16). In doing this he had to lower his son below the angels (Hebrews 2:7), and into the likeness of man (Philippians 2:7). He did this knowing that his son was going to suffer hardships, pain, and all manner of cruelty (Isaiah 53:1-12). God did this so that we may also become his children, and fellow heirs with Jesus (Romans 8:16-17).

As we see God as our father we need to recognize that he was willing to make a commitment for us. He gave up a lot. As a father, or as a child of his are you willing to make a commitment in your life? To give up things in your life?

-The elders

Special Guest Speaker
On Sunday, June 25, this congregation will be hosting another family trying out for the Pulpit Minister position. Charles Babb and his wife, Susannah will be with us from Texas. Charles will teach the Adult class, preach the Sermon and lead a devotional Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m.

A Dad is a person who is loving and kind. And often he knows what you have on your mind. He's someone who listens, suggests, and defends. A dad can be one of your very best friends! He's proud of your triumphs, but when things go wrong, a dad can be patient and helpful and strong. In all that you do, a dad's love plays a part. There's always a place for him deep in your heart. And each year that passes, you're even more glad, more grateful and proud just to call him your dad! Thank you, Dad.... for listening and caring, for giving and sharing, but especially, for just being you!  -Author Unknown
