Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 23:
Defeating the Giant of Suffering (Part 2)

Last week we talked about 10 reasons that people suffer. Let us look at five other reasons.

11) BRING OUT THE BEST IN LIFE - Pilgrim’s Progress was written in prison, as was Philippians, which is the most positive epistle of the New Testament. The best has often, with brave people, caused the best to come from their lives. Under hardship of much physical suffering, the apostle Paul wrote inspiring books under the influence of the Holy Spirit.
12) TO DRAW PEOPLE CLOSER TO GOD - The apostle Paul found that when he was weak in the flesh he was given grace and strengthened within and the result was he drew closer to God even in times of stress, duress and much physical, mental and spiritual suffering. Rom. 8:35-39 greatly encourages Christians under suffering as “nothing can separate us from the love of God” for each of those who believe, trust and obey Him.
13) TO DEVELOP MORE COMPASSION FOR OTHERS AND TO COMFORT THEM - See II Cor. 1:3-5; Gal. 6:1-2; Rom. 15:1. Helen Keller, due to her blindness, developed great compassion for other blind people and comforted them through her knowledge, skills and manifold talents of compassion.
14) GOD’S WAY OF IMPROVING THE WORLD - Some of the suffering of man that has lead to depression has paved the way for spiritual progress. Illustration: Max Cleland served in Vietnam. He lost two legs and an arm, yet he never gave up. He became the head of the entire Veteran’s Administration (at that time there were over 176 Veterans hospitals and clinics). He brought about Veteran’s centers all over the country to treat post traumatic stress disorders. He not only had this success, but when he left the top head position he became a Senator for the state of Georgia. He would not let anything defeat him.
15) WE DON’T KNOW ALL THE REASONS FOR ALL HUMAN SUFFERING, BUT GOD DOES - God’s grace is sufficient for us in times of stress, anxiety, and during periods of multiple types of suffering. The Scriptures enjoin us to draw near to God. See Heb. 10:22-23

“The brightest crowns that are worn in heaven have been tried, and smelted, and polished, and glorified through the furnace of suffering” E.H. Chapin. The gem cannot be polished without friction nor the child of God cleansed without suffering (adversity).

Claim these Scriptures that build faith for coping with suffering:

Shepherd's Corner

M E M O R I A L
The dictionary says, "commemorating the memory of a deceased person or event" - Memorial Day is designed to keep in remembrance a person, event, etc., that honors the freedoms we enjoy. Memorial Day has also been called Decoration Day and honors all military personnel, past & present, living or dead. In the U S A we celebrate Memorial Day annually and reflect on our physical blessings.

JESUS instituted a memorial that is available for all mankind no matter where they live. 1 Cor 11: 24-25 “And when he had given thanks, he broke the bread and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’" In the same way he took the cup, saying, "this cup is the new covenant in my blood, do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me."

Jesus instituted this memorial the night before he was crucified. And through that death, burial & resurrection, mankind has a direct avenue to our Heavenly Father. And ever since the beginning of Christ's Church (Acts 2), Christians have participated in this memorial feast on the first day of the week. Church, what a Spiritual blessing we have every Sunday to gather together and reflect on this precious "Memorial Day Feast" until our Savior returns for His people.

Slaying Giants In Your Life
(continued from page 1)
1. “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.” Rom. 8:18
2. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Rom. 8:28
3. “My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities that the power of Christ may rest upon me”. 2 Cor. 12:9
4. “We glory in tribulations (sufferings) also: knowing that tribulations (sufferings) worketh patience; and experience, and experience hope; and hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given to us”. Rom. 5:3-5
YOU CAN COPE WITH SUFFERING AND BE A VICTOR WITH CHRIST!

Teen Scene

This is a busy time of the year in the youth group. Seniors graduating, 6th graders coming into the youth group, school ending, camps starting, and the list goes on! I am very excited to announce, (for those who don't already know), that Samantha Ferris was baptized intro Christ Friday evening. Sam, as she is known by all her friends, is a close friend of Chris Dehlbom. She became a part of the group at winter retreat and we have all come to love her in the short amount of time that she has been here. We have been studying for several weeks and she made the decision to become a Christian. Please get to know Sam and welcome her into the family.

I am also very excited to announce to you all that next weekend we will have a couple here to look at for the youth minister position. Justin and Amy Bruner will arrive on Friday, June 9th. They will be here all weekend. Justin will be planning some activities with the teens for Saturday. On Sunday he will be teaching the teen Bible class and also will bring us a message during the worship hour. Justin is the son of David and Linda Bruner. He and his wife Amy serve as the youth minister team in Friendswood, Texas. They have been there for about three years. Before that they worked in Elk Grove, California. Both of them have excellent credentials and we are looking forward to their visit with eager expectations!

Parents please be aware that you are strongly encouraged to attend the sessions that Justin and Amy bring for your teens. You need to see how they work with your kids and it will enable you to give an eye witness opinion on the prospect of hiring them. Parents also take note, there is a flyer in your box concerning a meeting next Sunday. This is an important meeting and is intended for all parents of teens. Please plan to be there -- we have several items to discuss.  -Scott
