Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 22:
Defeating the Giant of Suffering (Part 1)

Subhadra Bhikshu declared, “To be born is to suffer: to grow old is to suffer: to lose what is loved is to suffer: to be tied to what is not loved is to suffer: to endure what is distasteful is to suffer. In short, all the results if individuality, of separate self-hood, necessarily involve pain or suffering”.

15 reasons for people suffering:

  1. Genetic Causes - Alzheimer's, bipolar (manic-depressive) illness, certain kinds of heart problems, diabetic problems, some types of cancer - the entire list is too numerous to list.
  2. Physical Disorders - Hypothyroidism, Addison’s disease, arthritic pain, migraine headaches, brain tumor, cystic fibrosis, multiple sclerosis, paralysis, etc. Too many to list.
  3. Cognitive Distortions - “cognitive” simply refers to how you are thinking and feeling about things at a particular moment. When you are suffering from depression or anxious, you are thinking often in an illogical, negative manner, and you are often acting in a self-defeating way from Dr. Aaron Beck’s book “Coping With Depression”.
  4. Adult Transient Situational Disturbances - Examples would be death, divorce, separation, being fired, loss of significant others, loss of health either emotional, physical, mental or spiritual can cause suffering, etc.
  5. Personal and Financial Crisis - These categories of conditions such as family crisis, troubles with authority figures, legal problems, among other things can lead to suffering.
  6. Sins of Omission and Commission - Sin often leads to suffering (psychological, emotional, mental and spiritual) “The wages of sin is death” Rom. 6:23; James 4:17; Prov. 6:16-19.
  7. Selfishness and Narcissism - These conditions often lead to suffering and depression. When self is put first then ego is on the throne and not Christ. The result is often sin.
  8. Tests of Faith - Job’s faith was tested to prove his love to God under adverse circumstances of losing his family, flocks, wealth, possessions, influence and health. But his FAITH PERSEVERED even though he was suffering with severe depression, “Though he slay me yet will I trust him.” Job 13:15 “The Lord giveth and taketh away; blessed be the name of the Lord” Job 1:21.
  9. Not Tempering Goodness with other Good Qualities - Prudence, wisdom and common sense is essential in order to prevent some kinds of suffering. An example overspending with plastic credit cards has caused much suffering to thousands.
  10. God is No Respecter of Persons - In Matt. 5:45 we see Jesus saying, “For he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust”. Hard times and crisis fall on the good and the bad that can lead to much suffering. As example tornadoes, hurricanes, floods, contagious disease.

To be continued next week.

Shepherd's Corner

The Pepperdine Lectureships are always a great experience. This year, one of the subjects was unity. This is the 100th anniversary when the census recognized the split of the Christian Church and the Churches of Christ. There appears to be a movement to fellowship more with each other, but not to change how we desire to worship. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to lead us and not be so rigid in our thinking that we become unapproachable in our interpretation of Scripture. You may be seeing more on this in future books and articles in the brotherhood, and you need to read them with an open mind. It may be fruitful for us to have more study on these issues. If you wish to have classes on these subjects, contact Mike Swaim or one of the Elders.

C.C.S. School News

"Hauling Rocks" by Teri Dupey

Friday, May 12, was an unusual day for C.C.S. students. Some were dressed-up for culture day, but oddly enough, all the children could be seen picking up rocks and loading them in Don Rude's tractor bucket or small individual buckets. The rocks were transported to the large pile at the other side of the field. Seventh and eighth graders were having a contest to see which team would collect and transport the most rocks. The "Yellow" team won with the count of 12 full buckets. Most were tired and quite dirty at the end of the day, but were happy to have done something out of the usual....Some were very happy not to have math that day!

The children and staff thank the church for the use of the building and grounds. We are very blessed to have a place to share our faith with the community.

Your Sister in Christ, Teri Dupey
