Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 21:
Defeating the Giant of Satan in Your Life

In the hymn, “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” Martin Luther alerts us to be on our guard: “For still our ancient foe doeth seek to work us woe; His craft and power are great, And armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his equal.” We are told to “stand against the wiles of the devil” (Eph. 6:11), and to resist him (James 4:7). Just how much power does Satan have over believers? What resources must we have in order to withstand his temptations and attacks? The Christian must learn to trust in the finished work of Christ. SATAN IS A DEFEATED FOE: “THEY OVER CAME him by the blood of the Lamb” (Rev. 12:11). Jesus became a human, “that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that, is the devil” (Heb. 2:14).

SCRIPTURES THAT DEFEAT THE DEVIL, ARE AS FOLLOWS:

  1. “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” (Eph. 6:11).
  2. “And then the lawless one will be revealed, and the Lord Jesus will slay him” (2 Thess. 2:8),
  3. “And they may escape from the snare of the devil after being captured by him to do his will” (2 Tim. 2:26).
  4. “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself (speaking of Christ) likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil.”
  5. “Submit yourselves therefore to God, resist the devil and he will flee from you.” James 4:7

SOME IMPORTANT CONCLUDING OBSERVATIONS THAT ARE ESSENTIAL - HAVE THE PROPER CHRISTIAN ATTITUDE TOWARD SATAN. WHAT ARE THEY?

  1. The Christian must employ his full equipment of warfare against Satan. (Eph. 6:12-18)
  2. The Christian must exercise strict self-control.
  3. The Christian must exercise vigilance “Be sober, be vigilant: because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about seeking whom he may devour: Who you are to resist...knowing the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world).” I Peter 5:8-9
  4. The Christian must resist Satan (James 4:17) and always trust in God and Christ for deliverance! (See I Cor. 10:13). In this way you CAN DEFEAT Satan in your life. GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN YOU (CHRIST) THAN HE WHO IS IN THE WORLD (SATAN).

Shepherd's Corner

Pulpit Minister Position

Praise God for His unfailing love in guiding this congregation in our search for a Pulpit Minister. Church, from the very beginning we have requested prayers, asking for God's blessings and help in this process. And Church, you have been wonderful in welcoming the families that have been brought in and tried out for this important position. We THANK YOU for your prayers and patience.

Next weekend this congregation will be blessed to have another wonderful Christian family here. Derek & Melanie Overstreet will be with us May 19 - 22. (Biographical Information sheets are available). Sunday, May 21, Derek will teach our adult class and preach the sermon. On Sunday evening at 5:30 PM he will lead a devotional and be available for a "Late Night with Derek" discussion time.

Church, your attendance and participation is requested and your feedback is encouraged. God does answer prayers.  -The Elders

Teen Scene

Teens, I can't impress on you enough, the need to read your Bible. I'm not talking so much about you studying the Word as letting the Word study you. Through the pages of scripture, the Lord shines His searching, probing light into all areas of your life. His Word walks through every room of your soul. There are no closed doors to the searcher of hearts. The author of Hebrews wrote; "For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart."

You need to let the Word of God analyze your life and show you where you need to change and grow. No, you don't need to fly through twenty chapters a day... just read the book. When you sense the spirit saying, "Pause and think about that," then obey Him. Filling your mind with His mind should be a top priority in all of life. One more thing, I've found that this exposure of our lives to God's truth has to be more than a once a week or haphazard proposition. It needs to be a daily activity. Spend time with Him every day and you will notice a huge difference in your life!  -Scott
