Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 20: Defeating the Giant of Satan in Your Life

As Christians we need to know the major power of our enemy the devil. The devil, the accuser, the title for the fallen angel, Lucifer, has many titles. His name means “False witness” or “Malicious accuser”. He is known as:

  1. The wicked or Evil One (Matt. 6:13)
  2. The enemy (Matt. 13:25, 28, 39)
  3. Murderer (John 8:44)
  4. Deceiver (Rev. 20:10), I Tim. 3:6-7; 2 Tim. 2:26)
  5. Beelzebub Prince of Demons (Matt. 9:34; 12:24)
  6. Ruler of this World
  7. Satan (Rev. 12:3; John 12:31; John 14:30)
  8. Devil (Diabolos) superhuman personality
  9. The tempter (I Thess. 3:5; Matt. 4:1), and
  10. The Prince of the power of the air (Eph. 2:2)

In short, he is presented as a continuous adversary of mankind (I Peter 5:8) who can tempt (Matt. 4:1), delude (Eph. 6:11), sin (John 3:8), lie, etc., and exert superhuman power in the process (Heb. 2:12; Jude 9). Satan can even masquerade as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14).
In Nigeria, West Africa we had to confront some of the works of Satan, in the different cultures and lives of the Africans. Some works of Satan are:

  1. Amulets: a charm worn by an individual through which he is aided by a demon (supposedly) by which he is to ward off bad luck.
  2. Animism: The belief that natural objects, natural phenomena and the universe itself possess souls.
  3. Black Magic: An exercise which is done with evil intention to cast a spell upon someone.
  4. Charmer: See (Deut. 18:11-12).
  5. Divination: Foretell future events or discover hidden knowledge by the aid of supernatural powers. See Deut. 18:10-14.
  6. Magic Arts: The arts of magic were to expel certain diseases or evil spirits. It could be learned by study of books (See Acts 19:18)

THE ETERNAL DEFEAT OF THE DEVIL
On the cross Jesus defeated and disarmed the devil and demonic forces (Col. 2:15). To believe in demon possession today or witchcraft or any other supernatural forces of evil as affecting the lives or destinies of men is to not know Scripture and the power of Jesus’ death on the cross. JESUS’ DEATH ON THE CROSS DESTROYED THE POWER OF SATAN. To be continued.

Shepherd's Corner

I Never Intended To Quit
By Gus Nichols

A man who had not attended one service of the church in four years told me he had never thought of “quitting” the church. I reminded him that he had 1) withdrawn his presence from the services and 2) he had refused to give his moral support, for he had not given one dime to help carry on the Lord’s work.
Then I asked, “What else would you have to do in order to ‘quit’ the church? In case you ever decide that you no longer desire to be a member, what other steps will be necessary to ‘quit’ the church?”
As the true status dawned upon him, his expression reflected his sober thought. He replied, “Why Brother Nichols, I’ve already quit, haven’t I? Well I surely didn’t mean to! And I don’t know when I quit...I’m coming back.” He did too. At the next service, he was restored and three years later he is still faithful.
Dear reader, how about you? Have you quit the Lord and His church without resolving to do so? Perhaps no one deliberately decides to quit, but many carelessly drift into backsliding.
If you quit attending service, quit boosting the program of activities planned by the elders and quit giving as God has prospered you to enable the congregation to meet its budget, you need to be restored.

Teen Scene

This week our search for a youth minister took a step backwards. We had hoped to have Paul Gorsline and his wife Feydra come here the weekend of 5/13,14. I had a conversation with Paul on Wednesday morning and he informed me that they were taking a position in Dallas. This means that we are beginning again the advertising process. In the meantime however, we are not going to sit around and wait for things to happen. I am very excited about the time shared Wed. evening with several of the teens. We discussed several things that we are going to implement over the next few weeks.

We are renaming our Wednesday time together to SHARE. This stands for, Serve, Heal, Apply, Relate, Evangelize. The teens are preparing to engage in numerous service projects and getting involved in the community. Please pray for the group to grow together and to grow in number. Watch the teens and take notice over the next few months how they will change!

Today we are at the Tri-Cities Rally in Richland. Please pray for a safe return. Teens, check the calendar for upcoming events. Camp forms are available for all sessions. See me for details. Have a great week!  -Scott

"Planting the Seeds of Learning"
By Marci Nelson

I don't know about you, but this lovely spring weather makes it very difficult to stay indoors. I enjoy being outside and working in my flower beds. Do you ever just walk around your yard and check on your plants even though you know that they could not have changed much since the last time you looked at them? I guess that it is the same desire to help plants grow and bloom that keeps me teaching. What a thrill it is to plant a seed of learning and to see my students own that knowledge. The satisfaction that I receive from watching my flowers bloom is small compared to knowing that I have taught students information that they will use for the rest of their lives. All Christians can experience this feeling of sharing truth. "A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." (Luke 8:5-8) In the Church and at the Christian school, we must continue to sow the seed and provide that good soil that helps those young plants to bloom and grow.
