Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 19: Defeating the Giant of Worldliness

Are you hiding in the world’s values or hiding your life in Christ? Are you able to walk with the master or will you walk with the world’s values?

The Christian who is “worldly” is the one who is devoted to or engrossed in worldly interest rather than in things relating to Christ and His kingdom. The King James Version of the Bible refers to the worldly person as being “carnal”, a word which literally means “fleshly.” The worldly Christian takes a halfhearted stand for that which pertains to the kingdom of God: therefore he or she easily falls victim to almost any temptation or false teaching that comes along.

"Buying, possessing, accumulating, this is not worldliness. -But doing this in the love of it, with no love to God paramount - doing it so that thoughts of God and eternity are an intrusion - doing it so that one’s spirit is secularized is doing it - THIS IS WORLDLINESS” Herrick Johnson “All the world’s ends, arrangements, changes, disappointments, hopes, and fears are without meaning, if not seen and estimated by eternity!” Tyron Edwards

On the realistic side be prepared for adversities, temptations, and failures which come to us all and DETERMINE TO KEEP YOURSELVES “unspotted from the world” James 1:27. God will not permit temptations to overwhelm us (I Cor. 10:13), and He will never leave us nor forsake us (Heb. 13:5 and John 14:16).

Claim the following Scriptures to negate and defeat worldly values. And by so doing uphold positive Christian values! In this way you will be defeating the giant of worldliness.

  1. “For what is a man profited, if he shall gain in the whole world, and loses his own soul, or what can a man give exchange for his soul?” Matt. 16:26
  2. “And be not conformed (fashioned according) to this world; but be you transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that (the) good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God” Rom. 12:2
  3. “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride (vain glory) of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.” I John 2:15

Shepherd's Corner

P A T I E N C E
Dear God, please grant me patience - - - and I need it right now! Sound familiar? We can smile at that old saying because it hits pretty close to home. Patience is normally not one of our strong suits.

As this congregation is conducting a search for a Pulpit Minister and Youth & Family Minister, much patience is needed. In our fast paced "instant everything" world, this has been a very long process. However, Church, God is calling us to be people of patience. "As God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." Col 3:12 An old expression is, "easier said than done". That is true unless we spend time in prayer and ask God for His divine help through our Lord Jesus and the indwelling Holy Spirit.

Scriptures are always a source of help and comfort. Remember, "The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." Gal 5:22 And of course, Heb 6:12 "We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised". And James 5:8 "You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near". Hang in there Church --- the Lord will provide.

-The Elders

"What's Wrong with Change?"
By Dan Dupey

It is a common complaint we find everywhere, today. "I can't", "I won't", "I don't know how", "Why?", etc. In general, we don't like change. We become "settled in", we might say, into unique habits that isolate or keep us from "change".

What a word full of MEANING! "But, I don't want to have to do that!" Or, we hear, "Why do we need that or can't we continue as we were?" We look at our students as an example and see that they, in general, are uncomfortable with change from week to week, and even day to day.

They are used to routine, order, structure, and a regular flow to their every day activities. Of course, this is good! But, we can change things and make it a very positive situation, correct? It is simply that, we are NOT usually comfortable with that!

On Tuesday, I was extremely SURPRISED to see a change in the staff and many students! They dressed, or tried to dress, like ME! I saw many different kinds of ties, dress shirts, scribbled on beards, many RED pens, and even a wallet and watch by one staff member that resembled those of "Mr. D's.” It was very amusing for everyone. This was CHANGE! We can have fun with change once in a while, correct? It was a very unique chapel time. I think we had some very surprised elders at our prayer time, as well.

We are all seeing many changes in our lives. Recently, we have all noticed some significant changes around our building. Garbage has been hauled away, the "Bible Barn" has a completely different look, the parking lot has expanded to allow more vehicles, carpet has been placed in the auditorium, etc, etc. These, of course, are physical changes. Where are we spiritually? As we mature, we change! As we learn more about the "sword', we change. Old habits disappear and new ones form as God begins to mold us His way through His Word, the BREAD of Life.

Change is a good thing if used or accomplished in the right way. Remember, righteousness is of God, unrighteousness is of the world. As we change in righteousness, we must learn to control our tongues. We must be patient and understanding. And, as I have repeated over and over with our students, we must respect and care for others FIRST! Change and maturity requires prayer. We often slip here and forget how important this is.

We will also include a card with cash if you would like to contribute to that. Please put your donations in the basket in the foyer. Thanks! -Jennifer Rude
