Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 17:
Defeating the Giant of Doubt & Unbelief

Doubts can be debilitating. Hesitation is characteristic of the doubter. Uncertainty throws the doubter off balance and interferes with his or her decision making. In spite of occasional tendency to doubt, honest questioning can become the threshold to a more solid faith and a deeper commitment to Christ.

Disillusioned by Disappointments Can cause Doubts: Disappointment can occur through divorce, a death in the family, a wayward son or daughter, unanswered prayer, or betrayal by another Christian.

  1. Offer words of encouragement. God does love and care for us. He wants Christians who are struggling to learn to walk with Him by greater faith.
  2. Help the Christian hurting to identify the source of the doubts, emphasizing that it is not wrong to ask why in life.
  3. Remind him/her that God has never promised freedom from adversity in life. It may be that the doubter needs to get the focus off his/her problems and get back to God - to see beyond the trials and circumstances of life to what God is trying to teach through some of the circumstances. GOD IS FAITHFUL. THE INTRUSION OF DOUBTS DOESN’T MEAN THAT GOD HAS CEASED TO CARE.

“Narrowness is the mother of unbelief. Obtain a broad outlook if you would agree with God in your philosophy and be able to transmit God’s own thought into your life” Joseph Cook. “When Dr. Johnson was asked why so many literary men were infidels, he replies, “Because they are ignorant of the Bible.” Were they truly acquainted with its contents, they must acknowledge it to be from God. And the truth of the remark is confirmed by the fact that some of the most distinguished advocates of Christianity took up the Bible to oppose, but ended by believing and defending it.” W.R. Williams.

Claim these Scriptures to overcome doubt:

  1. “Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and he shall bring it to pass.” Psa. 37:5
  2. “You, Lord, give true peace to those who depend on You, because they trust you.” Isa. 26:3
  3. “Now faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen.” Heb. 11:1

Defeating doubts is not an easy thing, it is an excellent thing. With God’s help you can defeat the giant of doubts and unbelief. “Casting all your care upon him: for he cares for you.” I Peter 5:7

Shepherd's Corner

PRAISE GOD for His unfailing LOVE. From the very beginning, God, knowing mankind needed a Savior, provided Jesus. The Messiah (God with us) was prophesied from the beginning. And at just the right time, Jesus was born and that event is celebrated by millions. The life of Christ is the central event that has changed history. When Jesus was baptized, God confirmed his Sonship and commanded mankind to obey Him. Jesus said "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me". John 14:6

Then Jesus made that possible through His death, burial and resurrection. The single most important event in all of history is the resurrection of Jesus. Because Jesus overcame death and lives, mankind also can live forever. When we obey our Lord and are baptized, the blood of Jesus cleanses us and we are raised a new creation, a child of God, a Christian. Praise God for His marvelous plan of salvation that is available to all mankind. Rejoice Christians, Jesus has overcome death and will return for us. "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am". John 14: 1-3

Lifting Up Servants Of God
Each year at the Pepperdine Bible Lectures, we continue our tradition of honoring church leaders, ministers, missionaries and their families. The year 2006 will again see selfless servants of God lifted up, not for earthly gain, but because it is our honor to honor them. They inspire us to higher service as they glorify God. Come to Malibu, May 2-5, and help us acknowledge the debt we owe these saints. There are always magical moments, not to be missed. Visit
pepperdine.edu/churchrelations.

"Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen!”
-Luke 24:5-6

Teen Scene

There was once a little boy who wanted to meet God. He knew it was a long trip to where God lived, so he packed his Twinkies and a six pack of root beer, and started on his journey. When he had gone about three blocks, he met an old man. He was sitting in a park, staring at some pigeons. The boy sat down next to him and opened his suitcase. He was about to take a drink from his root beer when he noticed that the old man looked hungry, so he offered him a Twinkie. The old man gratefully accepted it and smiled at him. His smile was so pretty that the boy wanted to see it again, so he offered him a root beer. Once again, the man smiled at him. The boy was delighted. They sat there all afternoon eating, drinking root beer, and smiling, yet they never said a word. As it grew dark, the boy realized how tired he was, and he got up to leave. Before he had gone more than a few steps, he turned around, ran back to the old man, and gave him a hug. The man gave the boy his biggest smile ever.

When the boy opened the door to his own home a short time later, his mother was surprised by the look of joy on his face. She asked him, "What did you do today that makes you so happy?" He replied, "I had lunch with God today." But before his mother could respond, he added, "You know what? He's got the most beautiful smile I've ever seen!" Meanwhile, the old man, also radiant with joy, returned to his home. His neighbor was stunned by the look of peace on his face, and she asked, "What did you do today that made you so happy?" He replied, "I ate Twinkies in the park with God." But before his neighbor could respond, he added, "You know, he's much younger than I expected!"

Many of you have probably heard this story before. It is an excellent example to teach us that it doesn't matter if you are old or young. Others can see God in your life. Let your life reflect the Son!   -Scott

C.C.S. School News

By Jennifer Rude

Teaching kindergarten is fun and challenging and wonderful and worrisome and amazing. God teaches me so much everyday through these ten little souls with whom I am blessed to spend my days. I have always loved Robert Fulghum's take on kindergarten from All I Really Need To Know I Learned In Kindergarten and wanted to share it with you.

All I really need to know about how to live and what to do and how to be I learned in kindergarten. Wisdom was not at the top of the graduate-school mountain, but there in the sand pile at Sunday School. These are the things I learned:

  • Share everything.

  • Play fair.

  • Don't hit people.

  • Put things back where you found them.

  • Clean up your own mess.

  • Don't take things that aren't yours.

  • Say you're sorry when you hurt somebody.

  • Wash your hands before you eat.

  • Flush.

  • Warm cookies and cold milk are good for you.

  • Live a balanced life--learn some and think some and draw and paint and sing and dance and play and work every day some.

  • Take nap every afternoon.

  • When you go out into the world, watch out for traffic, hold hands, and stick together.

  • Be aware of wonder. Remember the little seed in the Styrofoam cup: The roots go down and the plant goes up and nobody really knows how or why, but we are all like that.

  • Goldfish and hamsters and white mice and even the little seed in the cup--they all die. So do we.

  • And then remember the Dick-and-Jane books and the first word you learned--the biggest word of all--LOOK.

  • Everything you need to know is in there somewhere. The Golden Rule and love and basic sanitation. Ecology and politics and equality and sane living.

Take any one of those items and extrapolate it into sophisticated adult terms and apply it to your family life or your work or your government or your world and it holds true and clear and firm. Think what a better world it would be if we all--the whole world--had cookies and milk about three o'clock every afternoon and then lay down with our blankies for a nap. Or if all governments had as a basic policy to always put things back where they found them and to clean up their own mess. And it is still true, no matter how old you are--when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.
