Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 16:
Defeating the Giant of Intolerance to Change

Last week we discussed some general principles related to change. We looked at negative and positive principles regarding the flux of change. Today our focus is on Scriptures that will guide and aide us for positive change. The proper outcome is to allow the New Testament values to motivate us to apply, incorporate and to be transformed by them as fruitful peacemakers “walking in the light”.

The Scriptures then are forever “change agents” to transform and change us into the nature and very image of Christ.

SCRIPTURES THAT WILL HELP GUIDE US WHEN WE CHANGE:

  1. Romans 14: (a) Do not let matters of opinion become divisive (v. 1); (b) If you think a brother or sister has some strange opinions, keep in mind that God is their final judge (vs. 10,13); (c ), Those who walk by love are careful not to use their freedom (based on superior knowledge) in a manner that would harm a fellow believer (vs. 13,15); (d), The truly mature Christians work for peace and to build each other up spiritually (v. 19).
  2. 1 Cor. 10: (a), Freedom to change is limited by what is expedient, by what edifies (v. 23); (b) Love demands that we seek to do what is good for our neighbor and avoid what would harm him/her (vs. 24, 32-33); (c ), It is important that we be sensitive to the scruples of others (vs. 28-29).
  3. 1 Cor. 11; (a), Problems (even division) which come from change are merited if it is a matter of standing up for what Scripture clearly teaches (vs. 18-19).
  4. 1 Cor. 12,13,14; (a) Change should be avoided which: (1) So promotes the gifts or abilities of some members that it leads to pride on their part, and to a feeling of being less important or less needed on the part of others (12:14-25);
    (2) Is a procedural rather than a Scriptural change and threatens to cause a division in the Body (12:25); (3), Does not reflect the love which is: patient, kind, not jealous, not arrogant, does not act improperly, is not self-serving, is not anger prone, does not keep scores of wrongs, rejoices in the truth; bears, believes, endures and hope all things, and never quits (13:4-8); (4), Does not promote those things which edify (teach, instruct, build up, encourage) (12:7,14:3,5,12,26); (5), Promotes those things which cause disorder or confusion (14:23,33,40).

Shepherd's Corner

Pulpit Minister Guest Speakers
This Congregation is blessed to have three wonderful Christian families scheduled to come and spend time with us trying out for our Minister/Evangelist position. The dates are; April 9, April 23 and April 30.

This is a REMINDER of the scheduled activities for each of these Sundays. Each Guest Speaker will teach a combined Adult Class and Preach the morning Sermon. Their Sunday lunch time is currently open. Then at 5:30 PM the L.I.F.E. Groups and all members will attend an evening "DEVOTIONAL" led by our Guest Speaker, and participate in a "Pot Luck Fingerfood Fellowship". Following our meal together, the speaker will be available for a "Late Night With"...discussion time.

All members are cordially invited to participate on these three Special Sundays.

Praises At The End Of The Day
Each day of the Pepperdine Bible Lectures closes with wonderful opportunities for worship, inspiration, and holy instruction. The evening’s main lecture and devotion concludes, but then there are many late evening events —classes, praise services, drama and choral presentations—that beckon us to climb higher in our faith. To receive a beautiful booklet that outlines these and all the lecture events, call Church Relations at 310-506-4270.

Ladies Fall Fellowship
We will have a meeting in May and we need to determine the theme for our October 6th Ladies Fall Fellowship. April is going to be a busy month, but there are a lot of good things going on during the month. We will be having our first meeting in May. Your ideas/suggestions are important, so please jot them down and give them to Betty Rude or Mary Petersen by April 16th!

Teen Scene

I can not believe how time has flown! April, it seems like yesterday that we were planning the Christmas party! There are several things on the calendar that I need to bring to your attention. The first thing is today. Aaron and Chelan Metcalf are here today for us to take a look at them. They are also looking at us. You know teens, this process involves all of us, even you. The process of searching for a pulpit minister is important and your input and feelings are important. Think seriously about whether you feel they might be right for us. Over the next few weeks two more families will be coming to try out. Let's give our attention to them as well. This next Friday I would like to start getting together for some fun activities. Let's shoot for 6-9 pm here at the building unless I tell you otherwise.

On the weekend of May 5-7, we will be going to the Tri- Cities Youth Rally in Richland. I have registration forms for anyone interested in attending. The theme of their rally this year is "Saved From An Angel". Cost is $15 for early registration or $25 at the door. The weekend after that, May 13-14, Paul and Feydra Gorsline will be here trying out for the youth minister position. Paul is planning an activity for Saturday afternoon and then we will have dinner and a devotional. It is very important for all teens to be here for this !!!!

On May 19th the Senior High formal will be held. All teens 10th -12th grades are encouraged to attend. More information on this will be forthcoming. It is also getting close to camp time. I do have camp forms for all sessions for anyone who needs them. Last but not least, I only have 2 pictures on my bulletin board. Chynna and Alan are very lonely and we would like to see all of your pictures alongside theirs! Remember to keep your focus and spend time with God every single day. It's only through this personal time with Him that a relationship is built.  -Scott

"The Renaissance of the Mind & Spirit"
By Teri Dupey

The theme of our auction is "The Renaissance" and how appropriate. The Renaissance of the 1400-1600's was a period of revival, in thinking....in the art.. in literature....I think it is a perfect time for revival! Especially, a time for renewing the mind and spirit.

I have taught children of many ages, and still find that the 4 - 6 year olds are the
most receptive in rising to expectations. They want to please. My first and second
graders had only three days to learn this verse:

"Your gift is a sweet smelling sacrifice and is pleasing to him. My God will use his glorious riches to give you everything that you need. He will do this through Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:18b-19

A boy, that throughout the year was very reluctant to say his verse in chapel on Friday,
has volunteered twice now and was the first to ask if he could say the verse, in class, this short week. He said it perfectly and with enthusiasm. I was so proud of him.

If we could only be like the little ones and strive to be pleasing, above all to God, we
could accomplish so much! Let's have a renaissance of the mind and spirit and trust
more in the one that can do immeasurably more than we could ever imagine!

Thank you!
Thank you to all who donated items to the CCS auction and for all those who attended. Your support for the school is appreciated!

Dear Dalton Gardens Church Family,
Thank you so much for your contribution towards our replacement vehicle for the work here in Togo. All of the necessary funds were provided and the truck has been ordered. It is scheduled to arrive in mid-April at the port in Lome’ and we’re so grateful for the way you’ve allowed God to use you to provide for and bless us.

Our family is doing well and the work here continues to progress at an often overwhelming rate. Praise the Lord that His power is made perfect through our weakness! It is a wonderful joy to be a part of His working here among the Kabiye. May God continue to bless you as you glorify Him in Dalton Gardens. Thank you again for being such a blessing to us!

In His Love,
David & Becky Reeves
