Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 14: Defeating the Giant of Pride

Thomas Adam declared, “Pride thrust Nebuchadnezzar out of men’s society, Saul out of his kingdom, Adam out of paradise, Haman out of court, and Lucifer out of heaven.” It is Solomon who wrote of the seven things God hates. Pride is at the top of the list. Prov. 6:16 “As you desire the love of God and man, beware of pride. It is a tumor in the mind, that breaks and ruins all your actions; It loves no man, and is beloved of none; it disparages another’s virtues by detraction and your own by vainglory. It is the friend of the flatterer, the mother of envy, the nurse of fury, the sin of devils, and the devil of mankind”. (Author unknown)

PRIDE IS USED IN TWO SENSES

  1. The good sense. In this sense it is synonymous with proper self-respect, and proper personal dignity. See Matt. 22:39 and 1 Tim. 4:12.
  2. The bad sense. In this sense, pride is synonymous with excessive self-esteem, arrogance, “thinking more highly of yourself than you ought” Rom. 12:3, and elevated self importance.

Claim these scriptures to overcome the giant of pride.

  1. We must always remember we are lifelong debtors, to God, the Holy Spirit and to Jesus Christ.
  2. “God resisteth the proud but gives grace to the humble.” James 4:6
  3. “Our sufficiency is not of ourselves but of Christ” 2 Cor. 3:5
  4. The proper Agape and Phileo love will cure pride” See 1 Cor. 13:4.
  5. “For everything in the world - the cravings of sinful man, the lust of his eyes, and the boasting of what he has and does - comes not from the Father but from the world. THE WORLD AND ITS DESIRES PASS AWAY, BUT THE MAN WHO DOES THE WILL OF GOD LIVES FOREVER.” 1 John 2:16-17 NIV

Shepherd's Corner

"For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourself, it is the gift of God", (Eph. 2:8). When we speak of this grace we generally like to refer to this as a "free gift" when we teach others. Sometimes this may be misconstrued as cheap grace, but we shouldn't forget the cost that Jesus tells us about in Luke 9:23: "If anyone wishes to come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me."

"Cheap grace is the preaching of forgiveness without requiring repentance, baptism without church discipline, communion without confession, absolution without personal confession. Cheap grace is grace without discipleship, grace without the cross, grace without Jesus Christ, living and incarnate.

Costly grace is the treasure hidden in the field; for the sake of it a person will gladly go and sell all they have...It is the kingly rule of Christ, for whose sake a person will pluck out the eye which causes him to stumble...It is costly because it costs a person his life and it is grace because it gives a person the only true life...What has cost God so much cannot be cheap for us." Dietrich Bonheoffer (1937)

WEEKLY BULLETIN

Christian Prevention and
Relationship Enhancement Program

CPREP is designed to teach couples the attitudes and skills necessary to enhance and improve their marriages from a solidly Christian viewpoint. The program includes communication and problem solving skills and ground rules for handling conflict and promoting intimacy. Other crucial topics are covered as well, including commitment, forgiveness in marriage, friendship, and spiritual intimacy. CPREP is not marital therapy, but it is also not just enhancement either.

CPREP presents couples with powerful tools and concepts so that they can develop and maintain a stronger marriage for years to come. Not only are couples taught how to communicate more effectively by learning how to speak and listen, but they are also taught how to stop destructive interchanges. The ability to handle conflict better and stop destructive behavior is one of the most powerful things couples can be taught to significantly improve their chances of having marriages which bring honor to God and joy to themselves.

In attending the seminar you can “Gain fresh insights into why men and women see life so differently. You’ll leave with a whole new appreciation for who you are - and whom you love.” All program outlines and materials will be given to you at the seminar. The cost is $35 per couple, and singles are free. Financial assistance is available. Please see an elder.

Please Note:
Dean Lindell was inadvertently left off the birthday calendar. His birthday was March 18th.

Teen Scene

Well, it's over. Miqvah 2006 is now history. It seems like we spent forever preparing and anticipating and now in a flash, it's over. Memories were made last weekend. A wonderful time was had by all. Our final registration total was 174! I am so proud of our teens for their willingness to get involved. Ten of our teens taught classes. Cameron Sims and Kelsy Nirk taught "Communication is the Key". Chynna Freshour and Josh Nelson taught "What to do when the feelings are gone". JJ Larson and Shelby Nirk "dealing with famished feelings". Ronnie Ross and Alan Frisk, "Practice his presence". Chris Dehlbom and Ian Nelson, worship will change who you are". Several others participated in drama presentations. Micaela Dehlbom, Ni’chel Cooper, Holly Welch, and all the teachers doubled as actors. The rest of the teens all helped with set up and preparation. My job was so easy because of all of their help and of course the help of the entire congregation. A special thanks to Chris Rouse and Dave Johnson for their messages on Sunday morning. It is so awesome to be a part of a church that gets involved. Let's start looking forward to next year!

C.C.S. School News

"School Happenings" By Kathy Taylor

We have wrapped up a very busy few weeks at school and we are now on a much anticipated spring break. Our candy sales have gone well and we thank everyone for your support of this fund raiser.

We also had our book fair, history fair and talent show 1 1/2 weeks ago and much effort was put into preparing for these events. The students did a wonderful job preparing and performing. Spring is always a busy time and this year is no exception. We are looking forward to the Jog-a-thon, field trips and school spirit days in the coming weeks.

After our return from spring break we have our biggest fund raiser of the year, the auction. This is such a vital time for our school and we need the support of every available person, in whatever way you can help. The junior high students have been working on their selections from Camelot, Georgette Rude has put in countless hours gathering donations, selling tickets, planning the festivities for the evening, organizing the many volunteers and coaching the students' performance, and staff. So many people have already stepped forward to help the auction be a success. Please look at your situation and blessings and commit to doing whatever you are able to make the auction a tremendous benefit for the mission of the school. Tickets are still available and donations of new items will be greatly appreciated.

CCS Auction Information
The deadline for donations is March 29th. Please bring them to the church office. Thank you!

Buy your ticket now for this exciting event! Each ticket is good for one chance drawing and a delicious Renaissance style dinner prepared by CDA Inn’s Chef, Gene Tillman. The Royal Menu includes: Ice burg lettuce with Roasted Tomato Dressing, Cornish Game Hen with Cranberry Sage Dressing, Wild Rice Pilaf, Broccoli Spears with Roasted Red Peppers, Coffee, Tea and Decaf, and Chef Tillman’s Famous Bread Pudding!

Please watch the Auction Board in the foyer for a preview of items on the Bid List. Rhonda Sand of TMI Tours and Cruises has graciously donated a 7 day Bible Land Cruise for two with some famous people on board like Christian author Frank Peretti!

“A Night of Knights”
Plan now to attend the Coeur d’Alene Christian School Auction Friday, April 7, at the Coeur d’Alene Inn. There will be a special performance of the Broadway Musical Camelot by the CCS drama students. Tickets are on sale now. Be a sponsor and get the Royal treatment. See Kim in the church office.

Church Auction Baskets
Dalton Gardens will be donating two baskets to the CCS Auction this year. The two themes are “Baby on Board” and “Canning”. There is a “Baby Play Pen” in the foyer to collect your donated baby items such as diapers, wipes, clothing, toys, pacifiers, nursery items, etc. Ideas for the canning basket are mason jars, jams and jellies, fabric labels, canning supplies, etc. Let’s make these the biggest baskets at the auction!!

Thank you!
