Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 10: Defeating the Giant of Gossip

Slaying the giant of gossip is a worthwhile process for Godly behavior. A look in the dictionary reveals the many faces of gossip. It defines gossip as groundless rumor, hearsay, idle talk, prating and chatting needlessly. One thing gossip embodies is bearing tales. “He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets” Prov. 11:13. So gossip is running around telling stories. Gossip also involves revealing secrets, and whether they are betrayed accidentally or on purpose is irrelevant. “Gossipers turn an earful into a mouthful” George Bernard Shaw. Running people down is a bad habit, whether you are a gossip or a motorist. “Fire goes out for lack of fuel, and quarrels disappear when gossip stops” Prov. 26:20. “A dog is loved by old and young when he wags his tail and not his tongue” (author unknown). “To report what has been told in confidence and to add a few embellishments is a common human frailty and it is not new… Perhaps the politician’s “No Comment” is not enlightening, but it is often safe and sane” McIlyar Lichliter

Claim these scriptures for what God says:

  1. “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer” Ps. 19:14.
  2. “Do not speak harshly” Eph. 4:29. “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen”
  3. “A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret.” Prov. 11:13
  4. We must help stop gossip and strife. “Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down” Prov. 26:20.

Slaying the giant of gossip is essential for spiritual growth. Overcoming gossip with God’s help is possible.

Shepherd's Corner

LOVE LOVE LOVE
Have you ever heard someone say "I don't respond to ultimatums". In our society it's usually voiced "You can't tell me what to do!" So we ask, can love be commanded?

This very question was asked of Jesus by religious leaders in Matthew 22: 36-40 "Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the law?" Jesus replied: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law & Prophets hang on these two commandments".

Church, Jesus did not give us a suggestion, or an option. LOVE HAS BEEN COMMANDED! And for the greatest example we need look no further than the Bible to see that love in action - from God, from Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.

That word LOVE is not the Greek word phileo, which expresses friendly affection, but rather, agape, the commitment of devotion that is directed by the will and can be commanded as a duty. We have been commanded to love, unconditionally. That's why Romans 13: 10 tells us that "love is the fulfillment of the law".

Church, we need to daily ask our Heavenly Father to help us love one another and our fellow man in ways that are pleasing to our Lord.

WEEKLY BULLETIN

New Member’s Potluck & Congregational Meeting
On Sunday, March 5 we will be having a potluck lunch to honor all those who have been baptized and who have placed membership in the year 2005. You will be enlightened with important congregational news after lunch. After the meeting we will all enjoy George’s famous homemade ice cream and desserts. Please plan now to attend.

Note Taker Needed
If you would be interested in taking notes for the congregational meeting, please see one of the elders.

THE EVENING’S YOUNG
Everyone knows that spring evenings in Malibu are alive with things to do at the Pepperdine Bible Lectures. There’s late night classes, thrilling praise services, choral and drama groups…and don’t forget “Coffee and
Pie at the Cafe.” After the darkness settles softly on the endless sea, twinkling campus lights create a wonderland. May 2-5, 2006, is not so far away. There’s something for everyone, even after a Pacific sunset. Ask for a booklet at 310-506-4270.

Ladies’ Craft Day!
Bring your projects and join the fun! We are having a ladies craft day on Friday, March 10th, from 5:00 p.m. in the small auditorium. You should bring your craft supplies, a small craft supply item to donate as a prize for lots of drawings and a finger food to share for a potluck supper. There will be craft BINGO, snacks, fellowship and lots of fun! If you’re not a crafter, come and learn something new. Join us for all or part of this fun-filled evening. All are welcome, so bring a friend!

Marriage Seminar
Mark your calendars for April 1-2. More details will be coming soon.

"Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge”
-Psalm 62:8

Teen Scene

Teenagers, I'd like to ask you a question. How clearly do you see Christ? Do you picture a wavy figure in the middle of a desert mirage or the solid shoulder of a best friend? Do you depend on others to lead you, or do you actively seek his guidance? Does he seem far away, or amazingly, wonderfully near? You want to follow Christ, but at times you lose sight of him on a personal level. You may rely on the vision of a parent, Bible study leader, or a friend. But God desires more for you than a second hand faith. He wants you to see Him for yourself. To be touched by his glory. To witness his majesty. To know him as a friend. He is the one who can restore focus to your blurred vision, rekindle the fire of prayers gone cold, and steady your shaky faith. I encourage you to take a closer look at this one we call Jesus. You'll be glad you did because once you have caught a glimpse of his majesty, you'll never be the same again!

Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I only have two photos so far. Bring me a school picture A.S.A.P.!  -Scott

MIQVAH Requests
Please plan to host some of our guests in your home. We will need enough housing for approximately 150 people. If you can help with this please sign up on the kiosk. For more information see Kim Borsheim or Kim McIntire. Your hospitality is appreciated!

If you are able to bring in cookies, we need tons of cookies for Friday evening!!! Please drop them by the church office by Friday afternoon, March 17th. Thank you!

Who’s Coming to Dinner?
It’s that time again for Who’s Coming to Dinner? We’ve had a lot of fun and fellowship getting to know others in our church family. A sign up sheet can be found on the kiosk for everyone interested in hosting or being a guest for dinner. Everyone’s names who have signed up will be randomly drawn from a hat. First draw will be the host, and second draw will be the guest. Names will start to be drawn in March. For more information see Kim Borsheim or Paula Morris.

LTC is looking for any one who would be wiling to sew some simple vests for the LTC chorus group. Please see Cheryl Mullaly. Thank you!
