Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 8:
Defeating the Giant of Jealousy & Envy

Cain envied Abel’s offering because Abel’s offering was accepted by God while Cain’s was not. Anger, bitterness, depression and murder followed: “For where you have envy...there you find disorder and every evil practice” James 3:16 NIV Envy, and jealousy should be converted into “fruits worthy of repentance.”

Jealousy may be defined as an attitude of envy or resentment toward a more successful rival. FEELINGS OF JEALOUSY ARE USUALLY THE RESULT OF FRUSTRATION IN ATTEMPTS TO ACHIEVE A DESIRED OBJECT. He/she frequently attacks the individual who is the object of his/her envy making slanderous statements. Underlying jealousy may be strong feelings of insecurity and inadequacy. A lack of spiritual development may also be an influential factor in feelings of jealousy. When a person’s thoughts are not controlled by Christ, he tends to compare his/her situation with that of others and becomes envious and jealous. See 2 Cor. 10:12

Claim these scriptures to overcome envy and jealousy and thus slay the giant of envy.

  1. Envy and jealousy often produce covetousness. “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be CONTENT with such things as you have.” Heb. 13:5a KJV
  2. In James 3:13-14 we read “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy...in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.”
  3. Solomon put it this way: “A heart of peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.” Prov. 14:30
  4. “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy.” 1 Cor. 13 NIV
  5. Pray for those once envied, look for the good in others, and get to know those once envied and certainly learn to appreciate their assets and qualities which formerly produced negative responses and sin in you. Slaying the giant of envy is proper, profitable and productive which is pleasing to God and Christ.

PULPIT MINISTER SEARCH

The Dalton Gardens Church Family is truly blessed to have such a high caliber of Christian men that have been preaching our Sunday morning sermons. This congregation wants to express our heartfelt thanks to each one of you for your service to our Lord. A bouquet of roses to each of you.

Meanwhile, the Pulpit Minister Search Committee is spending time in prayer and deliberations over many wonderful applications. We want to thank Judie Sanborn, Teri Dupey, Mike Swaim, Andrew Marchese, Robert Clark and Larry Grow for their dedication and service. More applications are arriving each week and these committee members are committed to continuing the process until God provides us with the minister He wants serving this congregation and community.

Church, please keep this process in your prayers daily that the Lord’s Will will be done and we will soon have a full time minister. James 5:16b "The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective".

A WBS letter of Appreciation dated January 11, 2006:
I am greatly indebted to see a gift of a Bible from the Dalton Gardens Church of Christ. I want to tell you that they have done what the Bible is saying in Matthew 25:35-40. They have not seen me in person but have seen my request and consider it without hesitation. This shows that they have love for those who are in need. May God bless them. My gratitude also goes to my study teacher (Margie Dupey) and you Sylvia Slate who have taken over from my teacher for forwarding my request. I also want to thank the WBS assistant (Rob Mullaly) for his confirmation too….. In fact, I have nothing to give you than to say thank you. May the Almighty God, the Creator of the universe and everything in it, grant and reward all of you and the entire members of Dalton Gardens Church of Christ abundantly in Jesus name. Amen……..

Once more I said thank you. Extend my greetings to the entire church, my precious teacher, and everyone of you there. I wish you a happy new year and prosperous.

Yours in the Lord,
Sale Kwantizensi of Taraba State, Nigeria West Africa

"Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them on the tablet of
your heart.”
-Psalm 143:8

Teen Scene

God has already looked into the future, and he has determined what he needs you to be. You may have the opportunity to be a great businessman or woman who will influence the corporate world. God may be shaping you to be an entertainer or an athlete. Perhaps God is preparing you to be a missionary, a preacher, or a Sunday school teacher. Maybe God wants to mold you into a godly spouse who raises godly children. Whatever God's purposes for your life are, they are important in his scheme of things. He is counting on you to let him build you.

There may be a nation for you to lead. Perhaps God is building you in private so that when he releases you in public, you can bring the gospel to the people. There may be a youth group that needs you. Maybe a community somewhere is praying for a Godly mayor. There is much riding on your response to God when he asks if he can build you. How do you spend the quiet time in your life? When King David was born, he was full of potential. His response to solitude, however, turned that potential into promise. The same thing can happen to you!  -Scott
