Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 4: Discouragement

How important is it to slay the Giant of Discouragement? In every individual’s life there will be discouragement. There is the inevitable matter of aging; there is illness, and there is bereavement. In addition, there are many unfulfilled ambitions and goals, which must be filed away as unattainable as we go on through the years. In discouraging times like these, we might well remember the poem of some unknown author:

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will, When the road you’re trudging seems all up hill, When the funds are low and the debts are high, When care is pressing you down a bit, Rest if you must - but DON’T QUIT!

CLAIM THESE SCRIPTURES TO OVERCOME DISCOURAGEMENT:

  1. “Have I not commanded you? BE STRONG AND OF GOOD COURAGE: DO NOT BE AFRAID, NOR BE DISMAYED, FOR THE LORD YOUR GOD IS WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO.” Joshua 1:9
  2. “Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the Lord! Psa. 27:14
  3. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, even though the earth be removed, and though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; though its water roar and be troubled, though the mountains shake with its swelling. Psa. 46:1-3
  4. “Therefore we do not lose heart, even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.” 2 Cor. 4:16

It is good in times like these to remember the Lord’s warm invitation, “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” Matt. 11:28. Or, those matchless words of the apostle Paul, “We know that to them that love God all things work together, for good, even to them that are called according to his purpose” Rom 8:28.

SHEPHERD’S CORNER

As we have progressed with the refurbish of the facilities, the suggestion has come up as to what we should call the bus barn. There have been several suggestions, but no concrete solution. It is interesting that names seem to stick with the original owner’s name or what the use was for the facility. (You can see this in the names of homes by previous owners.) It is not this way with the Lord’s church. In Matthew 16:18, Jesus told Peter, ”And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build by church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.” Man should not name a church after anyone but our Lord and Savior. We should not let our personal feelings dictate how we are named. We are saints and serve the Lord as best we can by scripture. Let us be thankful for your heritage in belonging to Christ and not just to a church. P.S. If you do have a suggestion to the renaming, you are welcome to do so. Just turn in your suggestion to the office. God Bless each of you.  -For the Elders

Slaying Giants In Your Life

Then there are the words of the apostle John in Revelation 2:10, “Be thou faithful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.” Slay the giant of discouragement by God’s power through his word, promises and presence.

- Jeremiah 29:11

Teen Scene

This has been a very exciting week! The senior high guys trip concludes today. Preparations were made for the other winter retreats. Firewood put up and some fix it projects done under John's capable leadership. Closer to home, the girls had a sleepover at Carole Fredrikson's home and enjoyed some fellowship together. Planning has begun for Miqvah 2006. Several of the teens are coming into the office on Wednesday before class to discuss details. The theme this year will be "Living a Radical Faith". The class titles have been chosen and some of the teachers have already volunteered. This youth rally will once again be a highlight of our year. For it to be a success we will need everyone's help, young, old and in-between. One of the reasons that our rally is always good is that the congregation as a whole gets involved. Without a full time youth minister the work will need to be spread out. I will need all the help I can get. Please have an open heart and mind if asked to help! I am really looking forward to hosting kids from all over the northwest. Let's make it a rally to remember!
In Him, Scott

When Little Children Pray
By Jennifer Rude

God smiles every morning at 8:45 and 9:00 and every night at 7:30. I know He does, because at these times everyday, His children are talking to Him. At 8:45 we have opening prayer for chapel and at 9:00 we have closing prayer. And at 7:30 every night I tuck Josh and Adam into bed and they take turns saying a prayer. I don't know how often you have the opportunity to pray with children, but I am blessed with that privilege everyday in my job and at home. When little children pray, they are mostly thankful. They are thankful for their parents, friends, pets, school, teachers, food, homes, swing sets, beds, stuffed animals, pillows, and Adam is especially thankful for the thing that hangs in his closet with a space for each day's school clothes. Kids are thankful for the big things in life, the small things in life, and the fun things in life. They are thankful for God's creation and how they are a part of it. Every once in a while, they might ask for something from God, but it is usually for someone else; someone they know who is sick or hurt or sad. But no matter what they are saying, kids are comfortable talking to God. They seem to know that God hears them and cares about their lives. They understand that all good things come from Him. They believe in the power of prayer. And so, God has once again used children to teach me a lesson. A lesson about who He is and who I am and what He has done. A lesson that came through the prayers of those most precious of His children so sincerely and lovingly and gratefully coming to Him.

Tweeners Winter Retreat
This year’s retreat will be held on Jan. 27th- Jan.29th at Camp Princes’ Pines. The cost will be $35 for families, $30 for couples and $20 for singles. This is to cover the meal cost and pay for the use of the campgrounds. If money is the only reason you will not come, please talk to Tim Frahm. We do have a little extra left over from other events and we can help out. If you have never been, it is time to come and try it out! We have so much fun and fellowship. Tim Frahm will be presenting the Bible lessons and services on Sunday morning. There will be lots of fun family and kid activities. For those of you who have not been before, be prepared. Bring sleeping bags and blankets to keep warm at night. Don’t forget plenty of snow gear and maybe bike helmets for the little ones on the sled. Be careful not to bring too much. It all has to be snowmobiled in or carried. Please, Please sign-up and pay your money as soon as possible! It is so hard to plan and buy food with no money and no idea of who is coming. The sign-up is on the kiosk. Any questions ask Tim and Alyssa Frahm.
