Slaying Giants in Your Life
By Ralph Crump

Part 2: Loneliness

How important is it to slay the Giant of loneliness? Loneliness can strike as a result of experiences of rejection or feelings of guilt over not performing as one should. It can accompany tragedy, death, or illness. Loneliness results when one feels misunderstood or feels different from others in the group. The sense of not belonging feels very lonely. Often it comes with broken relationships or when one is separated.

Then there is another kind of loneliness— the kind to be desired. When I experience something new and wonderful, a new thrill, I like to be alone where I can think it over, remember every part of it. I like to bathe in those happy memories. That’s a satisfying loneliness.

“Loneliness has a way of infecting every fiber of our being: our hopes, ambitions, dreams, vitality, desires, wants, as well as our actual physical bodies. Eating and sleeping are frequently affected. Deep within each of us is the hunger for contact, acceptance, belonging, intimate exchange, responsiveness, support, love, and the touch of tenderness. WE EXPERIENCE LONELINESS BECAUSE THESE HUNGERS ARE NOT ALWAYS FED, and because we are sometimes separated from persons and places and things important to us.

Let us claim the following scriptures to overcome loneliness:

  1. “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite heart” Psa. 34:18
  2. “The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.” Zephaniah 3:17
  3. Jesus say, “Lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Matt. 28:20
  4. “For He himself said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Heb. 13:5b

SHEPHERD’S CORNER

It is easy to convey encouragement with the beginning of a New Year. I wish all of you God’s grace and love. We need to remember that God is a joyful God and wishes each one of us the comfort only he can give. As we finish on the refurbish of the building, I want each one of you to consider encouraging your friends and relatives to become part of the kingdom. Now is an excellent time to set your personal goals for the coming year. We have set some goals for the congregation that will be displayed each week in the Family News. God Bless each member and their families as we celebrate a new beginning and New Year.   -The Elders

WEEKLY BULLETIN

Annual Corporate Meeting will be immediately following Sunday morning worship on January 8th. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

January 7 & 8 are Significant!
This weekend Glenn Tunick and family of Waterbury, Connecticut will be with us to consider our Family and Youth Minister position.
It is important for teens to be involved in activities planned, parents of teens to associate with the family, and for all members of the congregation to be in worship service. Glenn is to do the preaching that morning. Sunday evening at 5:30 pm Glenn will lead a devotional for all members. This will be followed by a finger food event, and for those who wish to stay, a "late night with Glenn" period allowing for more personal interaction time.

Web Site - To prepare for January 7th and 8th check www.waterburychurch.org. One can read or listen to sermons of Glenn Tunick as well as making quick links to topics and papers.

Answered Prayer!
Jerry Welch would like to thank everyone for their prayers. He just finished the last of his six cancer treatments and he is clear of all cancer. Praise God!

GETTING TO KNOW THE TUNICKS

Glenn Tunick was raised in a Christian family, the oldest (and only boy) of five children. He attended Abilene Christian University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Youth and Family Ministry. During his senior year at ACU, he became engaged to Trenee and they married after he graduated. Glenn and Trenee have been married for 11 years and have two children, Abigail, who is 9 years old and loves gymnastics, and Stephen, who is 8 years old and has autism. Glenn has been a full-time youth minister for 11 years. He has served on the board of directors for two different Christian camps, serving in multiple roles at camps from counselor to lifeguard to director. He has led numerous mission trips, has coordinated and spoken at youth rallies, organized and led regional events, consulted with smaller churches regarding youth ministry, served as an interim preacher, led Bible studies, taught classes, counseled teens and families, as well as many other ministry tasks.

In addition to his ministry roles, Glenn has also been a manager at Blockbuster and been a substitute teacher in both public and private schools. Currently, Glenn is serving as the full-time Youth and Family minister at a congregation in Connecticut for the last 4 1/2 years and has completed about a third of the course work for his Master's Degree in Counseling. Trenee will be finishing her Associates Degree in Human Services in May of 2006 and plans to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Social work in the near future. Trenee's family lives in Spokane, and while Glenn and Trenee are happily serving the Lord in Connecticut, the idea of being near her family is appealing to both of them. Glenn loves teenagers and has a passion and a gift for youth ministry. He continually strives to help teenagers and their families develop a stronger faith in the Lord, as he endeavors to do the same.

WHAT’S HAPPENING ON THE TEEN SCENE?

CAN ANYTHING SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE CHRIST HAS FOR US?
Does God really love us forever? Not just on Easter Sunday when our shoes are shined and our hair is fixed. We want to know, how does God feel about me when I mess up, fail or fall short? When I snap at anything that moves, when my thoughts are in the gutter, when my tongue is sharp enough to cut a rock. How does He feel about me then? That’s the question. Can I drift too far? Wait too long? Slip too much? Did I out sin the love of God? The answer is found in one of life’s sweetest words— Grace.

God doesn’t condone our sin, nor does he compromise his standard. He doesn’t ignore our rebellion, nor does he relax his demands. Rather than dismiss our sin, he assumes our sin and incredibly sentences himself. God is still holy. Sin is still sin. And we are redeemed. Remember that the God who first made you is strong enough to sustain you.

TEEN NEWS
Teens please be aware of the fact that Glenn Tunick will be here next weekend. We as a group will meet here at the building on Saturday, 1/7 at 3:00 in the afternoon. Glenn has planned some activities for us and this will give us a chance to have a look at how we feel he would fit in with our group. This event requires as close to 100% participation as we can achieve. Also for next week, Sunday, 1/8 is the deadline for early registration to attend Winterfest. You all received a registration form 2 weeks ago. If you need another one please see me today. Please bring your form and check to the office ASAP. I think Kim will collect them for us.

As we begin the New Year I thought it would be a good idea to update our files and have everyone in the group fill out a new medical release form. Hopefully we will never need to use these but we do need to be prepared just in case. I have placed one in each of your mailboxes. Please fill them out and get them back to me as soon as you can. Have a great week. In Him, Scott Rouse
