Christian Counseling BY RALPH CRUMP

EIGHT PRINCIPLES OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING

Principle #8 -  Immediacy
This final principle is not necessarily different from the rest, rather it is part of several other principles that have been discussed. Ephesians 4:24 states, “Be angry but do not sin, and do not let the sun go down on your anger.” This tiny verse provides a wealth of information on personal and relationship problems.
First, it explains that anger is not sinful. Anger is a normal, God given emotion arising when problems occur. There is no reason to be shocked or ashamed when Christians become angry. Jesus became angry at times (Mark 3:5; John 2:13ff) but he did not sin (Hebrews 4:15).
Second, anger can lead to sin, and probably does so most of the time. This indicates there are right ways to handle anger as well as wrong ways. It comes down to a decision on what to do. Will we allow this emotion to cause us to do things the Bible declares as sinful, or will we seek the Bible to find proper, honorable ways to handle anger?
Third, immediacy! Paul commands that the sun is not to go down on our anger. The simple statement means what it says. If a problem arises it must be dealt with now - not tomorrow or the next day— but now.
In principle #2 (confrontation) we described how unconfronted problems place a person into a personal prison. The longer the problem is unresolved, the greater the feelings of anger, frustration, etc. As each day goes by more and more “baggage” is added. Thus the command, “Do not let the sun go down on your anger.”
In principle #6 (flee evil) we described how dangerous it was to dabble in or edge close to problems. They must be handled immediately. Sometimes fleeing is the answer. But they must be handled immediately.
I have dealt with so many people who carry around problems that are several years old. The size of the original problem pales in comparison with the enormous amount of “add on” problems collected over the years. Sometimes the grudges become so enormous the original problem is actually forgotten. How many years are wasted with selfish grumbling? How much good could have been done if the problem was handled as soon as it happened? How wonderful is the wisdom of God when he charged us to take care of problems right away.

SHEPHERD’S CORNER

Jesus taught, therefore every teacher of the law who has been instructed about the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house who brings out of his storeroom NEW TREASURES AS WELL AS OLD.

In New Testament times the scribe was responsible for the careful recopying of the Holy Scriptures. Unfortunately, most of the scribes in Jesus’ day had become proud and self-righteous. Nevertheless, they were students of Scripture, and at least some of them loved God’s word reverently and accurately and reverently. It was these scribes whom the Lord commended in Matt. 13:3-50, comparing them to the head of a great house, with treasures in the house, who could bring them out from time to time for the instruction and delight of all.

“Things new and old”. In the treasury of God’s Word, one who is “Instructed” in the old truths can always find new truths in its inexhaustible store. Both the old, well known and loved doctrine of Scripture, and stirring new insights which further illuminate and apply them are there waiting in the Word. If we love the Lord, we will love His Word and find endless delight in its study. Let us “grow in grace and knowledge of Christ 2 Peter 3:18. -The Elders

Maps for Senior Holiday Gala
Need help in finding the Archer home? Pick up a map located on the front door kiosk. The Senior Holiday Gala will be on Saturday, December 17, 1:30 p.m. at Ivan & Sally Archer's home. Bring your favorite holiday cookies or finger foods and a "White Elephant" (recycled) wrapped gift for exchange.

Note from Scott Rouse
For the next few weeks I have planned some special thoughts to help us remember our Savior around the Lord’s table. Some of the material will contain a little fiction. I use this to help make a point and draw us closer to him and to the cross. Please don't let the fictional portion get in the way of hearing the message.         In Him, Scott

New Year’s Eve Parties
This year I would like to have small New Year's Eve parties. The reason for this is so that you can invite your brothers & sisters in Christ and friends to your house to bring in the New Year.  This would be a great way to increase Gods kingdom.  If you would like to host a New Year's Eve party let George know at 772-6247 or georgewuest @ dgchurch.org after Tuesday.

PS… What have you done today to increase Gods kingdom?  There may not be a tomorrow!!!

Honor with a Poinsettia
Again this year, we are asking anyone who wishes to bring a red Poinsettia, any size, to help decorate the front of the large auditorium for the holiday season. It would be a sweet way to honor a friend or a loved one who has passed away. Please attach a small gift card so that we can acknowledge your donation.

"The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel--which means, 'God with us.'" - Matthew 1:23

WHAT TO BRING: Warm clothes and a sack lunch

"Give Thanks In All Circumstances"
By Marci Nelson

"Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Why is it God's will for us to give thanks in all circumstances? Having a thankful attitude will bring us closer to Him and help us to be truly happy and content. He wants us to be happy. It is not easy to give thanks in all circumstances; however, we should work on it becoming a habit, and it will change our lives.
So. . .Be thankful when you are having frozen pizza for dinner, because at least you are not going hungry.
So. . .Be thankful when you have to scrape your windshields, because at least you have a vehicle to drive.
So. . .Be thankful when the remodeling of the church building is inconvenient, because we have a nice place to worship in freedom.
So. . .Be thankful when your job is stressing you out, because God is providing for you a way to provide for your family.
So. . .Be thankful when your spouse gets upset because you didn't call to let him/her know that you would be getting home late, because he/she cares enough to worry.
So. . .Be thankful when your children are not being thankful, because it will be a good example to them and you are blessed with children.
It is all a matter of perspective, and it is God's will for us to be thankful in all circumstances.
Here is a Thankful Poem by one of my students:

Thank you, Lord, for air, water, and food,
Everything that you have made is truly good.
Thank You, God.
Thank you for family and friends,
Your eternal love never ends.
Thank You, God.
And thank you for your house of praise,
Going there on Sunday days.
Thank You, God.
By Ara Fromm

God Bless You, and Have a Great Week!

Youth Minister Update
As of this writing it is unsure what the time frame will be before we are able to fill the youth minister position. During the time it takes us to find the right person our kids still need someone to identify with, someone to lead, plan and help make things as smooth as possible. Scott Rouse has agreed to serve as interim youth minister. The elders are behind this decision and your support and prayers are appreciated. Scott will be setting up an office in the building and will be available for whatever our kids may need. Office hours will be posted soon.

Please use the new cups with the lids, that are provided when taking coffee into the auditoriums. Thank you!
