Christian Counseling BY RALPH CRUMP

EIGHT PRINCIPLES OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING

Principle #7 -  Do The Right Thing
Biblical counseling promotes the idea that working on proper behavior is more important than working on emotions. This is not to say that emotions are not important. In the story of Cain and Abel, Cain experienced a wide range of emotions when his sacrifice was declared unacceptable by God. The emotions were real, they needed to be talked about. But Cain simply kept them inside and allowed them to fester. God’s solution seemed simple, “If you do what is right, will not your countenance be lifted?” Cain was asked to DO what was right. He was not required to “feel good” about doing what was right. But the result of doing right was that good feelings would return.

God’s commands are given to us in the same way. Do what is right even if you don’t feel like it. “Love your enemies” (Matthew 5:44) whether it feels good or not. “Submit to one another in the fear of Christ. Wives be submissive to your husbands even if he’s a jerk. Husbands love your wives even when they treat you like dirt.” (Ephesians 5:21ff BPV— Bob’s paraphrased version)

If God waited until we deserved his grace, we would never have received it. If wives refused to serve until the husbands deserved it, there would never by any service in the marriage.

Biblical counseling does not ignore feelings. We talk about them. We attempt to dig into the past to see when, where, and why the feelings began. We explore other problems resulting from these feelings. The entire picture must be seen. But the solution to soothing the hurt feelings is found in the practice of proper behavior within the problem situation. This is the meaning of the term “righteousness,” doing what is right.

This principle will be the most misunderstood. There will be resistance to this because feelings seem to control our behavior. We must keep presenting this principle to the counselees because (1) this is what God expects us to do, and (2) it works! It didn’t work with Cain because he failed to act. It didn’t work with Rich Young Ruler because he failed to act. It didn’t work with Judas because he also didn’t do the right thing. Do what is right, and the good feelings will return!

SHEPHERD’S CORNER

Jesus has many names - over a hundred. “His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace,” Isa. 9:6. “Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Emmanuel,” Isa. 7:14

Jesus is the promised Messiah who stated: “I am the resurrection and the life,” Jn. 11:25. Luke in Acts states, “There is no other name given under heaven whereby we must be saved,” Acts 4:12. “For he is the Lord of Lords,” Isaiah states. He also tells us to “praise the Lord and call upon his name,” Isa. 12:4.

Revelation states that Jesus is “the bright morning star,” Rev. 22:10. How bright does his light shine in your life? Jesus states that he “hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written King of Kings and Lord of Lords,” Rev. 19:16. To what extent is he Lord, Master, and King of your life? “And whatsoever you do in word or deed do all in the name of the Lord Jesus giving thanks to God and the Father by him.” Col. 3:17

We have listed several names of Jesus, but in what ways do you daily glorify him in word, deeds and in prayer?  -The Elders

Tweeners Christmas Party
Please join us for a Christmas party on Friday, December 9th, at 6:30 p.m. we will be meeting at Wolf Lodge restaurant for dinner. We will then be going to the Frahm’s home to open presents, sing and fellowship. Please bring a “White Elephant” (recycled) wrapped gift per person for exchange. A sign up sheet can be found on the kiosk. For any questions see Alyssa Frahm.

Honor with a Poinsettia
Christmas time is such a bright, joyous season, and beautiful Poinsettias always give it an elegant beauty. Here’s a borrowed idea that we think is great. Would you like to honor a loved one’s memory and brighten up our auditorium at the same time? Again this year, we are asking anyone who wishes to bring a red Poinsettia, any size, to help decorate the front of the large auditorium for the holiday season. It would be a sweet way to honor a friend or a loved one who has passed away. Please attach a small gift card so that we can acknowledge your donation.

"Knowledge is proud that it knows so much; Wisdom is humble that it knows no more."
-William Cowper

Welcome Home
Following worship today there will be a potluck to honor and welcome home the safe return of Michael Kish, Matt Rude and Tony Rohrenbach. Please bring a main dish, salad or dessert pertaining to the particular LIFE group that you are involved in. If you are not in a LIFE group please bring your favorite dish to share.

Food Donations
We are collecting items to make Christmas dinner baskets this year. If you are able to help out, we ask that you please have the food returned by Sunday,
December 18, to the church office. Thank you, George
P.S. Our pantry is getting low — please bring one shopping cart per family. Just kidding! Whatever you can do to help is greatly appreciated.

Senior Holiday Gala
The Senior Holiday Gala will be on Saturday, December 17, 1:30 p.m. at Ivan & Sally Archer's home. Bring your favorite holiday cookies or finger foods and a "White Elephant" (recycled) wrapped gift for exchange.

C.C.S. SCHOOL NEWS

"A Pure Heart"
By Dan Dupey

Today is a day to start, if you have not done so already, expressing the excitement we all share about our future! Jesus, our great champion and commander of pure Love, has given instructions. He has emphasized in a myriad of ways the importance
of sharing our Love of Him and the encouragement we feel to others around us!

We have entered His gates with thanksgiving in our hearts, have we not? The new season has arrived. We see the beautiful, wonderful (well, some feel that way) snow everywhere around us. The bright white snow reminds us of purity. It might remind us of the lamb that was led to the "altar". It may remind us of the pure heart that Jesus exemplified in His every day life.

Our students become instantly excited when they see the snow falling all around them. Remember when you were 4,5, and 6 years old? How exciting it was to experience something so new and so different! God, in all His wisdom has a reason for the seasons, for the snow and especially for happy children and that kind heart.

But, above all else, put on Love, which is the bond of perfection. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which you were called in one body ; and be Thankful! Col 3:14-15

Everyone needs encouragement! From our faithful brothers and sisters to all those around us, let us send encouraging words. Life can and will pull at our hearts and minds. The "family" sometimes becomes discouraged from all the activities and influences in life. Jesus has said, "Do not lose heart." We need to remember to strive for the pure heart by the example He set forth. Life is not always easy, but it certainly flows much easier when we place Christ at the top of our list to emulate and follow.
He makes our Light shine for one reason: We know our future; we have Hope! Let's
continue to strive for a pure heart and encourage those around us today!
