Christian Counseling BY RALPH CRUMP

EIGHT PRINCIPLES OF BIBLICAL COUNSELING

Principle #5 - Replacement
Probably the greatest principle in the Bible concerning the resolution of problems is that of replacement or the “put off/put on” principle. This is also a principle of eternal salvation. Paul explains in Eph. 4 that …. In reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. (Eph. 4:22-24)

The eternal principle states that newness of life cannot happen without the putting away of the old. At the same time, it also states that the righteous life cannot be entered by merely putting off the old self. Both must happen. The context gives a few examples of how this applies on the personal level.

  • Stop lying and start speaking the truth (vs. 25).
  • Stop stealing and start working so that you may share what you earn with others who are less fortunate (vs. 28).
  • Stop using unwholesome (diseased) speech and start using speech that will edify (vs. 29).

Jesus once told the story of a man who had the courage to chase an evil spirit from his mind (Matthew 12:43-45). Because the man did not replace his mind with good things, leaving his mind empty but neat and clean, the evil spirit came back and “the last state was worse than the first.”

Biblical counseling must involve the counselees in actively pursuing positive behavior. Part of counseling, of course, is to explore the situation and delve into the past if necessary. Evil or damaging behavior must be stopped. But it must be replaced with proper behavior. Counseling that does not include the replacement principle may do more damage than good.

SHEPHERD’S CORNER

It would be an understatement to say that we’ve had a few changes lately. The Lord has blessed us with some physical changes to the building. He has blessed us with many brothers and sisters who have given of their time and talents to get this done. To each one of you we thank you.
As you can see our pews are missing. They were taken to be refurbished , and will be missing for a few Sundays. In the mean time we will be using our chairs here, and some have brought their lawn chairs. Things may seem a little chaotic, and the chairs may be a little uncomfortable, but please be patient with us. This to shall pass.
We know that there are more physical changes that will occur, but we need to also focus upon the spiritual changes that need to continue to occur. As we read in II Peter 1:5-8 God wants us to display these changes in our growth. We need to continue to serve God by reaching out to others, and to share God’s love.

Need help getting ready for Christmas?
It’s already getting to be that time of year…and every year members of the Church of Christ enjoy buying presents for children they do not know. If you, or someone close to you, has had a difficult year and needs help getting Christmas presents for children, please fill out a ‘Christmas Wish List.’ The Wish Lists will be located on the kiosk in the church foyer. Please return the Wish Lists to Kim Howard in the church office by November 27 and we’ll make arrangements later for deliveries.
