SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

Today is a day that we are honoring Mike Reeves for the work that he provided for the Lord's kingdom here in Coeur d'Alene for the past ten years. I would like to give some personal recollections of having worked with him over that time. First of all, Mike loves what he does. I have known very few men who give the time that he does to the church. Even as an "older" man :-), I would challenge anybody to show the energy that he does every day. Most teenagers could not keep up with him. He was raised by a Christian family and has continued to serve God throughout his life. Sometimes we think that we have to have some kind of dramatic conversion story to be effective. While these stories are encouraging, it is far better to not have to go through those and risk being lost. We raise our children so that from infancy they can know the Lord and His Word. Mike and Earlene have continued this training on in the lives of their children. He is very skilled in the teaching and preaching. I know that he will continue to be a servant anywhere that he goes. Sometimes we don't always know what the Lord has in store for us but as the old adage says, "We may not know what the future holds but we know who holds the future."

The Great Northwest Evangelism Workshop (GNEW) starts this Wednesday. The children of Israel made annual treks to Jerusalem to renew their faith. Getting together with others of like faith, being energized by lessons from inspiring preachers and teachers, and singing to the glory of God. It's a time for families to learn and pray together. It's a time for friends to join hands in the work of the kingdom. The hymn writer says, "Where is the blessed I knew when first I saw the Lord? Where is the soul-refreshing view of Jesus and His Word?" - William Cowper. It is good to remind ourselves of what we are all about. GNEW will help to do this. Many from the Dalton congregation are making the trip to Tacoma. Make your plans to come as well.

Have a Great Week!!

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." -Mark 16:15-16

BIBLICAL PRINCIPLES FOR CONTENTMENT
Why is man discontent? Some reasons are: 1) Dissatisfaction over issues in your life, 2) Improper thinking and thoughts, 3)Money problems, and 4) Not accepting circumstances that you are facing. When we are not content what can you personally do to make necessary changes and readjust your thinking? Answer is to focus on the following Biblical principles.

1. Godliness advances contentment. 'But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.' 1 Tim. 6:6-8

2. Be content with your present material possessions. 'Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as you have.' Heb. 13:5

3. Having appreciation for the simple things of life. Consider Ghandi's and Jesus' life. Appreciation for instruction of wisdom which gives man knowledge that may lead man to spiritual contentment. Prov. 1:2-4

4. Consider the apostle Paul who stated in Phil. 4:11. 'I have LEARNED in whatsoever state I'm in to be content.' It is a spiritual maturing process to learn how to be content.

5. Having a spiritual mind. 'To be spiritually minded is life and peace' Rom. 8:6. 'For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.' Rom. 8:14

6. Prayer can bring a state of contentment and peace. 'Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God...and the peace of God shall keep your heart and minds through Christ' Phil. 4:6-8

7. Counting your blessings can bring contentment 1 Thess. 5:18.

8. LET US LEARN FROM SCRIPTURES HOW TO BE CONTENT (Phil. 4:11) AND THEN APPLY THEM TO OUR LIFE.

Mike's Memos
Mike & The Moon

There are so many things in God's creation that inspire me, and challenge me to live for Him. The moon is at the top of the list. There is something about that mirror of the sun that draws me toward God and causes me to sense His presence near. Last night, as on many other occasions, I watched from my back yard as a beautiful full moon came up over Canfield Mountain. It is such a beautiful sight, and always reminds me of the awesome love of our Father.

I was reminded how the moon is a reflection of the sun's light, as Jesus was a reflection of His Father, and as we are to be reflections of the Son's light, and of His love. That analogy has always been a challenge to me. Being a reflection of the Son of God is an awesome responsibility, and a wonderful opportunity as well. Sharing my reflection of Him with you for the past 10 years has been a blessing and joy to me, but I wondered, how well have I done? I know that sometimes clouds hid His reflection from you, and I'm sorry for those times, but I pray that more often you were able to see His light, and His love, and His joy reflected in my life, and that it blessed you for a day and for eternity.....not because of me, but because of Him.

Youth Ministry has been my passion and my inspiration for such a long time. It has consumed me, and filled me, for almost 40 years. Some have suggested, and perhaps I could, write a book about it and all of its rich experiences. But if I were to condense it down to one idea, it would take me back to the moon. Nothing is more important in youth ministry....nothing is more important when working with kids.... than a true reflection of Christ. I have often been inspired by the moon to pray that my life would be the reflection of the Lord that would draw young people to Him and cause them to want to fall in love with Him. I pray that my ministry here, in youth, as well as other areas, has been used by God to enrich your life toward Him. I am certainly spiritually richer because of you, and I thank you. Thanks for the ways you have blessed my family.... Earlene, Bobbie, Ashlin & Joleen, and for your continued support of David and Becky in Togo, Africa.

Thank you for all your joy and your friendships that will continue to dwell in my heart. Thank you for being a reflection of His love into my life.

From this point on, I know I will not see a moonrise again without remembering the moon over Canfield Mountain, and the Christians, especially the teens, at Dalton Gardens who left indelible imprints on my heart. May you remember 'Mike and the Moon', and see a reflection of the Christ whose reflection of the Father gives us life and hope for the resurrection when we can be together for eternity.

'I love you with the love of the Lord.' Mike

MATCHING FUNDS FOR 100,000 BIBLES FOR AFRICA
It is entirely possible the next President of the African country of Liberia will be George Kiadii, a faithful Christian, converted by missionaries in Liberia and educated at Abilene Christian University. Roger Dickson, African International Missions, states there are several candidates, but Dr. Kiadii has gained the support of most "Christ believing churches" in the Liberian community. Dr. Kiadii has been in touch with several influential Christians here in America. He has asked us to provide 100,000 Bibles for distribution at a National Day of Prayer Sept. 22-23. A Christian couple in Atlanta has offered $100,000.00 as a "matching funds" gift for these Bibles. The Bibles are already printed and on hand at Africa International Missions in Capetown, South Africa.

There is an immediate need for dedicated Christians and churches to come up with this $100,000.00 "Matching Funds" account.

It will take a 40' shipping container to send the Bibles to Liberia. Just Tuesday it was learned that a small church of 30 from DeRidder, Louisiana, has given the $10,000.00 necessary for the shipping. Every dollar gift will put a Bible in the hands of people in Liberia. This is one of the greatest opportunities given to God's people in Africa for many years. Marvin Phillips says, "Let's keep praying... call in all the favors you have from others. If we work together we can (with the help of God) work this out!"

The election will be held October 11 of this year. Much needs to be done! Send your "matching funds" gift to "Bibles For Africa"; Liberia c/o Southwest Church of Christ, 4515 Cornell, Amarillo, TX 79109

Search Committee Communications
Our Youth and Family Minister search is on-going and will continue as planned. To date our advertisements have resulted in 8 individuals submitting applications and information. Others have inquired and we can expect additional applications as we near the cut-off date of August 15th. The Search Committee is meeting each week, before Wednesday night service, to continue the process and communicate with applicants.

Garden of Prayer Request
We are breaking it down to the simple. The amount of work is too much for just a few and we need EVERYONE's assistance so that we may be able to get other areas done before winter. Look on the board for a small part of what you can do. It's called 'KEEPER OF'. Many thanks to those who already have a lot on their plate, but are helping anyway! We are only asking for 20 to 30 minutes a week and in some areas just per month.

Remember to keep praying for your
Secret Prayer Sister!
