SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

What kind of sermons do you like to hear? Some like hell, fire, and brimstone. Some like sermons that challenge their sense of commitment and encourage them to work harder. Many prefer sermons that make them more aware of the awesomeness of God and that bring them into His presence. Many like to hear sermons that are dealing with problems that they are dealing with right now. Many like to hear stories. Jesus certainly told a lot of stories. Some want to walk away having felt somewhat entertained.

John Bright said, "It is not up to the preacher to make the Bible relevant. It already is!" Although it is timely to hear sermons that deal with what I am going through right now, we need to realize that all of us are at different places in our lives. What reaches one person on a particular Sunday may be different for someone else. More important than preaching on a particular topic is to make sure that listeners hear a word from God. I feel like I can put together a decent sermon if called upon to do so. But to do it every week and hit a winner is part of the challenge of preaching. Does the preacher always have to hit a "winner" to be effective? I suppose it depends on what you define as a winner. That is why it is so important to preach on actual texts of scripture rather than the topic of the day. When you do this, you receive instruction when the time of crisis does come and are already prepared for it.

Dear Abby received a letter from a person who said that he attended church for nearly 40 years and could not honestly say that he remembered too many sermons that had an impact on him. A reader responded that his wife had cooked him meals for over 40 years 3 times a day. But he couldn't honestly remember any one particular meal that provided him with any meaningful nourishment but cumulatively he would be very unhealthy without having had them. Sermons can fall in a similar category. Not every one is going to be a winner, but cumulatively you will be a lot more unhealthy spiritually had you not had them. The preacher has a major responsibility to deliver a word from God. He needs to use all the tools he can to make it interesting and practical. But James says that the listener also has a responsibility to come those times prepared to let God work on his/her heart. Cumulatively, you will be healthier.

Keep on loving each other as brothers. Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it. -Hebrews 13:1-2

Congratulations to our 2005 Senior Graduates!

We Care
Larry West, from We Care Ministries, will be here to conduct a one day soul-wining seminar entitled 'Confronting With Care - Our Responsibility to Our Neighbor' on June 26. After a meal together, the seminar will be held that afternoon starting around 1:30 p.m. The LIFE groups will not meet that day and we encourage everybody to come to this seminar. This will be a seminar on a method that has proven to be very effective in sharing your faith with someone who does not know Christ. Be sure to be here for this as it will give you some tools to share your faith with others more effectively.

Shepherd's Corner
Who is your family?
Have you ever looked around and noticed how many adoptions there have been in this congregation? Some are more recent than others. Some have more physical resemblance than others. One thing they all share is that they are special. Everyone of them was chosen to be in that family. They and their family share a love as a family.
Have you realized that spiritually we are all adopted. That is what we read in Rom. 8:14-17, Rom. 9:3-8, Gal. 4:1-7, Eph. 1: 3-6. We are all special. We are chosen. As a family we share a love as a family, the family of God.
As a family we face many obstacles and challenges. We make changes, and as we struggle we continue to grow. God loves us and blesses us as we struggle. As we read in James 1 and 1 Peter 1 we need to learn to accept struggles in our lives with a good attitude, to have our focus upon God, and to glorify him. After all, we are God's family.
