SHORT  BY
STUFF   DAVE SHANER

When you read the New Testament, you do not find explicitly that the purpose of our Sunday assembly is to worship God. We can worship God on any day at any time. I am thankful that we do worship Him at that time. But God's purpose for us to get together every first day of the week is to be an encouragement to one another, to reaffirm our faith, and to take the Lord's Supper. In all of this we praise God for what He has done for us.

Israel, throughout the Old Testament, would have annual gatherings, such as the Passover and the day of Pentecost that acted as reminders of who they were as a people. The churches of Christ have no central organization, and therefore no one church or group of churches can speak for any other congregation. But over the years certain groups have independently put together some gatherings, often called lectureships, workshops, seminars, etc.) that have served to strengthen the faith of God's people. The Pepperdine lectures is an example of one such event, and is one of the largest gatherings I know. The Tulsa Soul-Winning Workshop has also been very successful over the years.

These are great but they are so far away. Dave Dowlen with a group of preachers and church leaders throughout the Northwest are 'resurrecting' the Great Northwest Evangelism Workshop (GNEW) in Tacoma July 27-30. It will be held on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University. Some of the best preachers and teachers in the church will be there including Jeff Walling, Marvin Phillips. Families are not only welcome, but they are also strongly encouraged to participate. For years, many families planned their vacations to coincide with this great spiritual workshop. So, from children to senior saints, excitement is in the air from early morning to late evening. It's a time of refreshment for the soul and the body alike. Childcare will be available for children. We take vacations to relax and enjoy our families. Make part of your vacation this year to be energized in your faith. For more information, check the welcome center in church foyer.

Have a great week!

He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned." - Mark 16:15-16

Search Committee Communications
This afternoon an open forum is being held 3 to 5 pm here at building to address future staffing needs and desires as it relates to effective ministry involving current families and their children. Also, we need to have a vision of outreach to the community.

Secondly, be thinking of who you will suggest for consideration for the full committee. Who best can bring representative thinking and exercise judgment in the decision making process? A diverse group of 5 to 7 persons is desired. Thus, be thinking of those that can represent:

* Single parent families' views & needs
* Teenage members' views & needs
* Young adults, post high school, views & needs
* Teachers of Bible classes, LTC, etc. views & needs
* Parents of pre-teens and teens' views & needs.

Congregational Meeting
There will be a congregational meeting next Sunday afternoon, May 22nd at 3:30 p.m. Among the topics to be discussed include GNEW, the youth minister search, the church plant, refurbishing the building, as well as open questions and answers. Plan now to attend May 22nd! Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend. The Sunday LIFE groups will not be meeting that day.

Garden of Prayer....
Any painters in the house? The design/construction committee is in need of your help. Our beautiful Pavilion in the Garden of Prayer needs to be stained. If there is anyone who has the equipment and is able to help in this ministry by giving of their talents, God will greatly bless you for it. The Garden is an ongoing ministry/project that not only can be used as an outreach for others, but can edify each one of us by seeing the beauty of each season that God has so richly blessed us with. Also, we can use some help in weeding. If you could donate 15 minutes per week, and we all work together, it makes light work. Please see Rick or Janet Blanchard, or call (762-5096) to volunteer.

VBS Planning Meeting
There will be a Vacation Bible School planning meeting on Thursday, May 26 at 7:00 p.m. at Alyssa Frahm's house. If you are planning on being involved with VBS please be there. For any questions call Alyssa Frahm or Michelle Kish.

Appreciation
It is so easy to take life for granted.....We are blessed abundantly, yet we forget or get wrapped-up in all the stuff of life...I'm convinced that children are a close second to the greatest blessing ever...God loved us so much...He gave us Jesus....Jesus loves the little children...They are so very precious! It is easy for me to be sentimental these last few days of the school year...I know that I have a few short days ...to leave a lasting impression....a lasting lesson about what is important in life...I pray that I am successful...What will they remember? What will they forget? I want the children to know they are loved above all.

First and second graders are writing stories...Some are excited and very creative...They like to share their stories,....their accomplishments. They are ready to "Party"....,almost checked-out....,so I have to be creative myself and come-up with new ways to keep their feet on the ground and their heads out of the clouds. It's not easy, but all-in-all, it is rewarding.

The parents are great! This week they have treated us to lunch at "The Olive Garden", delivered our favorite latte, and showered us with many other gifts of appreciation. Perfect timing!

Thank you so much church for supporting us. We share this mission with you and are encouraged to know that you care. Please keep us in your prayers as we wrap-up another year and prepare for the next. Dan and I are celebrating ten years of service here at Coeur d'Alene Christian. May God continue to work through us.

Thank you, Teri DuPey
